“Look, update me. If Tom gets the shareholders together, we’re going to jump the gun. We’ll meet to discuss business, and then reveal the information we’ve got. Hopefully, the threat of going to jail should be enough to at least temporarily put a halt on his plans.”

“There’s one more thing, Jake. Just a small thing.”

“What is it, Jim?”

“I hate to tell you this, Jake, but we got a letter today delivered to your L.A. Office. Threatening stuff, you know?”

I cringed. “What did it say, Jim?”

He hesitates, but I already knew what it said. It probably confirmed that Alicia was pregnant, or threatened to hurt me. Or both.

“It’s in my office. In a locked drawer. Ain’t for anybody’s eyes but yours, Jake.”

“Any ideas on who sent it?”

“One. But you’re not gonna like it.”

I pinched my brow. “It couldn’t be,” I said.

“There’s a history there, Jake.”

“Jim, if you see her, donotlet her in the building.

“Wasn’t planning on it. See what else you can find out on your end. I’ll call you later.”

Jim hung up.

I looked at the clock and saw it was 10 p.m. I called Alicia again. She wasn’t safe in that house. But if I told her why it could destroy everything.

Chapter 19

Alicia

“Idon’tcare.Idon’t care about your excuses, or what you’ve got to say. I don’t want him around here anymore.”

“Sam, please. You’re not listening to a word I have to say.”

“Because you’re not being straight with me!”

When Sam was angry, there wasn’t a hope in hell of calming him down. I knew that, and so did he. Jake had left half an hour ago, but the atmosphere of mistrust and suspicion he’d left in the house was still there.

“He’s supposed to be your best friend. And yet you sound more critical of him than you do of anyone else right now.”

“That’s not how friends work. A friend is supposed to be someone you can rely on. Someone you can trust. And yet here I find him having an argument with you in the kitchen? The guy doesn’t talk to me, he doesn’t tell me what’s going on, and frankly, it stinks.”

“So what? You think he’s some kind of criminal? A psycho?” I was trying to provoke Sam, but I also hoped he’d finally be able to help me solve the mystery of what was going on with Jake. It seemed like one minute I looked and found a sensitive, kind, caring man with a big heart. But the next minute, he was selfish, irresponsible, and evasive.

“No, of course not. But you hear things, okay?”

“Like what?”

“Rumors. That’s all I’m saying. He’s a pretty well-known guy, Alicia. And I’ve heard stuff about him. Stuff I don’t like. They say he’s going to lose his company, that there’s some big scandal coming out this week …”

“About what? About him getting someone pregnant a few months ago?”

Sam looked shocked.

“Yeah. How did you know?”
