“Yea. Dottie woke me up early. She said we could do a few laps, and then she would take me to school. Can you believe she never went to school? Ava taught her.” Joseph was smiling from ear to ear.

I would have to remember to thank her later. She seemed like a good kid. She would make a good aunt for Joseph.

Joseph was down the hall before I could tell him to have a good day. A second later, Dottie was running past me. She waved and kept going.

The house had never been so lively. I kept a minimal staff and didn’t have too much company. It was only the second day, but I enjoyed the noise and the smile on Joseph’s face.

Ethan was coming down the hall. I dipped into a nearby room. He knew something was up with me. How could I tell him it was his mother? He hated the woman. Only mentioned her once. His dad kept a picture of her. Ethan used to stare at it, deciphering if he got her eyes or hair. Then one day he thought he saw someone that looked like her, but she was a junky. He never looked at the picture again. I didn’t have the heart to tell him it probably was her.

He walked down the hall toward Ava’s room. He was probably on his way to see her. The moment he saw her fight, he fell for her. Had the circumstances been different, he could have pushed his feelings for her to the side. Instead, his gramps forced him to marry someone. He chose her. I didn’t blame him, she was perfect.

Once Ethan was past me, I snuck out of the room. CeCe and her husband Daryl worked for me. She took care of the house, and he drove me around. I should have driven myself to find Lisa, but I didn’t want to leave my car unattended.

I found Daryl in the kitchen with CeCe. He was helping her prepare breakfast.

“Sir, can I help you?” CeCe flipped a pancake. They were Joseph’s favorite.

“No, thank you. Daryl, I need you to drive me somewhere.” I turned to walk away, then turned back. “Can you grab some of your worst clothes? Like the ones you fix the car in.”

He nodded without asking any questions. I trusted him not to say anything to anyone about what we were about to do. Not even his wife. He wouldn’t risk getting them both fired.

A few minutes later, we were both in the car heading to Poortown. I changed in the back while Daryl circled around. If anyone really looked at me, they would know I wasn’t homeless. Hopefully, this wouldn’t take long.

“Sir, where would you like me to go?” Daryl asked.

“Not sure. I’m looking for a woman named Lisa.” I peered through the window, hoping she would appear.

“I could get you a different woman if you are just looking for practice.” Daryl winked at me.

I scrunched my brow.

“Ya know, since you have to consummate the marriage next week, and it’s been a while.” He pulled over. A group of hookers lined the street.

“My dick works just fine.” I got out of the car and approached them.

Big mistake. They surrounded me. All of them were licking their lips and purring at me.

“You pretending to be homeless, Big boy? I can help you live out your fantasies. Wanna fuck me next to a dumpster?” The hooker grabbed my hand.

I pulled away. “I’m looking for a woman named Lisa. Older. Skinny.”

“I can be anyone you want.” Another one bit her lip. If she leaned over any further, her chest would fall out.

The only woman not crowding me nodded for me to follow her. I pushed past the others who were still begging me for money and sex.

“Tell me more about this woman.” She chewed on a toothpick. She had on jeans and a t-shirt, indicating she either wasn’t a hooker or was their pimp.

“Her name is Lisa. She has the shakes. There is a tattoo on her arm. It’s Ashley spelled wrong.” I ground my teeth. The thought of her tattoo pissed me off.

“Shakes? From drugs?”

I nodded.

“More than likely, she’ll be on drug alley. It’s five or six blocks up. You’ll know when you see it.” She held out her hand.

I placed a fifty in her hand.

“Word of advice. Homeless don’t smell like they just ran through an orchard.” She sniffed the air and walked away.
