I entered my room. Blood squished between my toes. Blood dripped from the walls. Blood covered every piece of furniture.

There was one spot on the wall that wasn’t drenched in blood. In thick black letters was printed.

Leave. You don’t belong here, Murderer!

My heart pounded in my ears. I looked around. Felix, Sandy, and Dottie were on the other side of the door. They stood staring. Felix was saying something, but I couldn’t hear him.

Ethan appeared behind them. He pushed them out of the way, and scooped me into his arms. We were walking away. Ethan was shouting orders. I couldn’t understand what he was saying. Blood dripped from my feet.

I looked behind us. Joseph was running toward Dottie. No! He couldn’t see that. She saw him and ran to him. She grabbed him before he reached my room. Felix slammed my door shut.

Ethan carried me away.

Water splashed my face. I didn’t move. Ethan climbed into the shower with me. When did he get naked? The water turned crimson.

How much blood had gotten on me? I looked down at my hands, they were red. Had I touched the wall? Maybe.

Soap slid over my body. Ethan washed me. The water was warm, but my body was numb.

So much blood.

The words.

Brad.

He was coming for me.

My time was up.

A towel wrapped around me. Ethan carried me to a bed, probably his. He joined me on the bed and pulled me onto his lap.

“It’s okay. I will find who did this. They will pay.” He rocked me.

It was time to tell him.

“I know who did it,” I whispered. My voice cracked with each word.

“Who? How?” He pulled back to look at me.

“Brad, he has been leaving me death threats. They are in my nightstand.” I took a deep breath. I would not cry.

He chuckled. “Your ex?”

“Yes. Why are you laughing?” Maybe telling him was a bad idea.

“He can’t get in here. It had to be one of the staff.” His jaw twitched. “Or Felix. Maybe he is jealous.”

“Felix is like a brother. Besides, he has been enjoying his new bed with Sandy. It couldn’t be the staff. Few people know I’m a murderer.” Tears spilled. I tried to keep them in. I couldn’t.

“Peach, there is no way you are a murderer. What did you do? Step on a bug?” He wiped my tears away.

“I am. I wish I wasn’t, but I am,” I sobbed. “I killed my father.”

“Peach, I don’t believe that for a second.” He kissed my forehead.

“He would hurt my mom. One day I had enough.” I closed my eyes, trying not to relive that moment.

“That’s protecting your mom. Not murder. Just like I’m going to protect you.”
