She turned to me. “I’m not positive you didn’t send the bloody letters. I don’t like you, and I can tell you don’t like me. I’m not really sure why you bought me, but you did. I’m not willing to die. So, that means once a week we fuck. I would feel more comfortable if you came to me.”

This conversation kept spiraling. I was stuck with this woman for the next five years. Yes she was beautiful, but there was something dark about her. Even if it was just that everyone wanted to kill her. I was torn between letting my grandparents hang her and fucking her senseless.

“You will wear a condom every time. And if she wants me in the room, so she is more comfortable, then I will be there.” Ethan was making demands he had no right to make.

“No, she needs to be on birth control. No matter which one of us gets her pregnant, we would all be stuck for eighteen years.” Five years I could survive. I couldn’t survive eighteen. Judging from the glares, she gave me, neither could she.

“I don’t want kids, so I agree with Adam.” She averted her eyes.

What woman didn’t want kids? That was another strike against her.

“If that’s what you want, Peach.” Ethan bent down and kissed her cheek.

“Hey, if you want to watch me fuck her, that’s fine.” I shrugged. “When will the vow exchange take place?” I asked.

“In four days. At our place.” Ethan accentuated each word. I had a feeling he was trying to make me jealous.

“Myself, Bri, and my grandparents will be there.” Having my grandparents, there was probably a bad idea. I didn’t care. I loved them, and since this would be my only wedding, I wanted them with me.

“You are not having the owners of the auction there!” Ethan tossed his wine glass at the wall. He overreacted, why?

“Uh…your grandparents…uh…own the auction.” Ava gulped loudly. Neither one of them wanted them there. Interesting.

“Yes, and they will be there. I’m not someone you want to piss off. Now, if you’ll excuse me, I have better things to do.” I stood and left.

Bri, would take them home. I wanted to give Ava the benefit of the doubt in regard to Judith’s accusations. Then she showed up with Ethan Moore. It seemed like she was very much into him. Maybe she had rigged the auction so he would buy her.

Then there were the threats. She had a lot of people after her, which meant she wasn’t well-liked. I was going to find out exactly why.

When Bri returned, I sent him out to find Judith. I didn’t care for her, but maybe I had misjudged her. I had to find out what she knew about Ava.

It took him a few hours to locate her. She had an address, but she didn’t show up there until eleven. He told me that, at first, she flipped out. Refused to go with him. Then he mentioned my name, her face lit up. Judith grabbed a bag and left with him.

I had fallen asleep on the sofa when they finally showed up. Hearing a woman’s voice in my house jarred me awake. I sat up, wiping the drool that coated my cheek.

“Mr. Gould.” Judith stuck out her hand.

I grabbed it. My saliva-filled hand squished into hers. She laughed and rubbed the saliva off on her jeans. Heat rose to my cheeks. Fuck my life.

“Your goon said you need me.” She stared into my eyes.

“His name is Brian,” I growled. I didn’t like when people called him anything but his name.

“I didn’t mean anything by it.” She sat down and crossed her legs.

“I’m gonna be blunt with you. I don’t know much about Ava Palmer. You seem to know her. Tell me everything you know.” I leaned forward.

“Well, she’s a manipulative little bitch. She uses her looks to get men to fall for her. Then she crushes them. Not to mention what she does to her friends. As soon as she doesn't need you anymore, she disposes of you.” Judith uncrossed her legs and leaned closer to me. “Ava Palmer is a terrible person.”

Her rant didn’t actually tell me anything aside from the fact that she hated Ava. I already knew that from my grandparents' house. What I wanted to know was why. What specifically happened? I ran my hand across my face. Fuck, I didn’t have my mask on. I grabbed it off the coffee table.

“You don’t have to do that on my account. We all have scars.” She pulled up her sleeves. Marks ran up both of her arms.

“What’s that from?” Despite what she said, I put my mask on.

“Fighting mostly. That’s how I first met Ava. She showed up at the ring all prissy and in pink. Everyone misjudged her. We all thought she was so sweet. I was even friends with her.” She looked off into the distance as if she could see her past.

“What happened?” This was the information I wanted.
