You could always not show up. Love, Ava.

And miss our wedding night? Never. Don’t you have your own phone?

Don’t need one.

How else would you tell me how much you want my cock?

Ugh, I couldn’t believe I had to marry him. I had high hopes for him. They were crushed when I met him. Especially since he might have sent the threatening letter. Brad was the number one suspect, but how would he get in?

“Do you need a phone? Ethan could get you one. Shoot, I could.” Tasha took back the phone.

“No, I don’t talk to anyone.” I chewed my lip.

“Except us.” Felix stood to take the tray of sandwiches that had just arrived. “Sit with us, CeCe, eat.”

“Oh no, Mr. Felix. I ate already.” She averted her eyes. “Joseph! Come eat. The pool will still be there when you’re done.”

Joseph hopped out of the pool. My mother had a towel in her hands, waiting for him. She wrapped it around him and dried him off. This version of my mother never existed for Dottie or me. Not even before I killed her husband.

The nurses helped her over to the table. Joseph dragged his chair to be right next to my mom. He grabbed a salami and tomato sandwich and gave her one. She took a huge bite, and he did the same.

There were days Dottie would beg her to eat. She would claim she wasn’t hungry, even when her stomach grumbled. Now for Joseph, she ate. No problem. This kid was a true blessing, even if he was a kid.

“So, we are doing wedding stuff?” my mom asked through chews.

I nodded.

“Joseph, you are gonna be a handsome ring bearer.” She ruffled his hair.

“Grandma Carrie, did you have a ring bearer?” Joseph looked up at her.

Shit, she can’t mention my dad without a meltdown. Where was Dottie? She was better at this. How was I gonna help?

“No, Sweetie. I had a small wedding. This will be my first big wedding with a bridal party, flowers, and dresses.” She took another sandwich.

Wow! No meltdown, not even a hint of one. Granted, she hadn’t mentioned him, but she mentioned marrying him. Still, I couldn’t wait to tell Dottie. If she ever came back.

“This will be the biggest wedding ever. I’m Tasha, Ethan’s friend. I’ll be helping your daughter with her wedding.” Tasha shook my mom’s hand.

“I’m sure it’ll be lovely. I think Joseph should be in a little suit.” She smiled at Joseph.

Dottie and Sandy came back from the bathroom and joined us for lunch. Dottie sat and winked at me. Oh, Sandy must have clued her in. Good, she could help sneak us out.

“Tasha, I was thinking of projecting scenes on the walls like nature: waterfalls, mountains, sunsets.” Dottie leaned in and grabbed a sandwich.

“Hmm. I don’t know if we can put that together fast enough.” Tasha scratched her chin.

“Oh, I can. Moore Tech has everything I need. Ethan has allowed me in there, he said I might even earn an internship there. Anyway, I can show you how to do it after lunch.” Dottie smiled.

“Perfect. Oh, if we can get pics when they were kids, we could project those too.” Tasha scribbled on the paper.

“We don’t have pictures,” I mumbled. I didn’t know any homeless person that had pictures.

“That’s okay. I have some other ideas.” Tasha tapped her temple with the pen.

Tasha spent the rest of lunch scribbling away on her paper. Every once in a while, she would ask a question and then go back to her writing. I had no clue a wedding was so much work. On the streets, you would go to a free judge, and they would document that you took your vows. That was it.

I read about massive weddings with fancy ballgowns and extravagant updos. Now, I would get to experience it.
