I dashed over and yanked her back. A glob of oil narrowly missed her bare foot. Fuck.

“Go clean up. We will go out to eat.” I pushed her toward the bathroom.

While she was in there, I started on the kitchenette floor. Oil had splattered everywhere. An entire paper towel roll later, and I got the floor cleaned up.

Buzz. Buzz.

Ugh. What did Tasha want now?

I clicked open my phone. Ethan was calling. The meeting!

“Hey, I’m with Aiden right now,” Ethan said the moment I hit answer.

“Good. What does he want for the land?” I had no time for pleasantries. Lisa could come out of the bathroom at any moment.

“Mr. Miller, you don’t seem focused. Are you sure you are committed to running a professional baseball team?” Aiden asked.

“Mr. Cartright, my focus is my concern,” I snapped. He had no right to question my commitment.

“Since I’m selling you the land, it’s my concern. Since I am the only person in New Boston that owns enough combined acreage to build a baseball field, it’s my business.” Aiden’s voice was calm even though his words were laced with poison.

“Your real estate business retains my law firm, so we both have something to lose if the deal goes wrong.” Yeah, I would threaten him if need be.

“No need for threats. All I’m saying is, bringing baseball back to New Boston is a big deal. I want it to be a success,” Aiden growled.

I hadn’t realized Aiden was so passionate about baseball. “Fine. I'm committed. Now, what do you want?”

“You to be here for the deal. Since that won’t happen, I’ll settle for a few conditions,” he said.

“Spit it out.” Lisa could come out of the bathroom at any second.

“Forty percent of the profit. Two sections that are free for the homeless, and my brother Derek to manage,” Aiden replied.

“No, what’s the dollar amount?” I wasn’t giving him part ownership.

“Bro, that’s why I called. He doesn’t want any money.” Ethan grabbed the phone. “It’s your call.”

“Fuck.” I didn’t have time for this.

“Tristan, do you think we can stop at the store? I need panties,” Lisa called out.

I tried to cover the mic.

“Dude, a woman? You took off for a woman? If Adam hears about this, he’ll tell his grandparents,” Ethan whispered.

“Adam?” What was he talking about?

“I’ll explain when you get back, too many ears. Be back before the wedding,” Ethan snapped.

“Chill. Put Aiden back on.” This conversation was falling off the tracks.

“Decide,” Aiden demanded.

“Thirty-five percent. One section for the homeless. I’ll only deal with Derek if Jason is around to keep him grounded.” It was well known Derek didn’t take anything seriously.

“Deal.”

“Ethan will work out the paperwork. I’ll sign it when I get back.” I clicked off the phone.
