“Had,” she says sharply. She flicks something onto my bare chest. I reach up with a hand and grab it. It’s a mangled looking bullet. My eyes swivel back up to hers. “You took this out of me?”

“Lucky you didn’t kidnap a business major.”

I frown. “Well, thanks,” I say a little shocked. “It was fine though.”

Yeah, right. It’s utter bullshit, and I know that. So does Tessa. She rolls her eyes.

“Oh, yeah, it was totally fine bleeding out while you blacked out on the floor. No big deal for a big tough guy like you, right?”

I frown. “You fixed me.”

“I did.”

She could have run and left me here to die. But here I am alive. And here she is, still here.

“You could have run.”

“I know.” She shrugs.

“So why didn’t you?” Tessa twists her lip in her teeth. “Why’d you save me, Tessa?”

She frowns. “Because I’m going to be a doctor, and doctors save people. That’s literally what they do. And you don’t pick and choose who you do.” She shrugs. “So, that’s why.”

“Even if it meant not running away from your kidnapper?”

“Guess so,” she shoots back.

“Thank you.”

“For not running away or for saving your ass?”

I smile. “Both? Mostly saving my ass though.”

“Well,” she shrugs, and her face blushes red. “You’re welcome, I guess.” She chews on her lip again, and I groan a little inside.

Fuck, I want her mouth again. I want all of her, actually. I want to pin her down and use my tongue to explore every fucking inch of her skin.

“My dad…” Tessa frowns and trails off.

“Yeah, Dino sure is fun, huh?” I growl.

She shakes her head. “I didn’t know. I mean, I knew he was a gangster and all, but not that.” She looks sick and angry. “Not the thing with the girls.”

“Same,” I admit. “I’ve run plenty of jobs for your father. I always knew he was a scumbag piece of shit.” I glance at her. “Sorry.”

“Don’t be. If the shoe fits,” she mutters.

“Well, I didn’t know about it until recently. I pulled a job and found the evidence about the girls. Dino found out and set me up to take me out.”

Tessa nods, still looking sick. “And now? I’m the trade for getting out from his crosshairs?”

I tense my jaw. “I don’t know.” Not anymore, that is. Yeah, that was the plan. But now? Now I’ve kissed her. Now the lusting obsession has grown to something I never saw coming. Now she’s mine, and I’m not so sure I’m willing to part with what’s mine now.

“Yes, the plan was to trade you back to your father for a bailout and a free pass out of this fucking city without looking over my shoulder.”

She nods and looks down at her hands. She’s brave and fierce. But right now, she looks so lost and innocent. She puts up a tough front, but right now, I can see the sheltered little mob princess behind the façade.

“That’s not happening anymore,” I growl with conviction. She slowly raises her head. Her pretty blue eyes widen in surprise. “I’m not giving you back to that monster now.”
