“Everything okay?” She takes a seat on the stool on the other side of the island while I finish adding the caramel drizzle to her coffee. She peers into the cup when I slide it toward her. I’ve been adding a little artistic flair each morning she’s stayed. “Hmm. Is that a penis?”

“I didn’t draw a picture today, I was preoccupied.” I glance down at the cup. Sure enough, the caramel drizzle looks like a cock and balls. “Didn’t realize I did that.”

“It’s cute.” She smiles up at me, and then her gaze drifts to the edge of the granite countertop or more specifically the part of me that is hidden behind said surface. That is until she raises out of her seat to ogle the crotch of my sweatpants.

“Don’t you dare say my cock is cute.” I point a finger at her. “It’s manly and huge. Like the Hulk.”

“Or The Rock?”

“Yes, exactly. Like The Rock.” I would not be against her referring to my cock as The Rock if that’s what took her fancy. Dwayne Johnson might since he’d look puny next to my enigmatic dick, but that’s his problem.

She presses her lips together, trying to hide her smile even as it grows and grows. “But The Rock is cute.”

“No. He’s not. He’s manly.” The tension eases from my shoulders. I flex my pectorals and biceps. “Not as manly as me, but pretty manly.”

“And yet…” She shrugs like she’s so sweet and innocent when her eyes betray the joy she gets over teasing me.

“Well, aren’t you the little brat?” Not that I’m against her brattish behavior. Not at all. I enjoy the way she teases me. It’s exciting. And our flirtatious banter…her pretty smiles are what I imagine our future will be built on. It was easier to imagine it wasn’t something I wanted or needed before I’d had a taste of it.

Before her…the game had gotten stale…being me was too easy and none of it meant anything. This, right here, this moment with her; it’s what makes it possible to breathe while my family and Ro are going through all this shit with Alec Hawthorne. This is real.

“Mmm.” Her smile grows.

I want a million mornings like this. Every single one of them. “You’re going to say it, aren’t you?”

“Well.” She tilts her head to the side. “It’s adorable really.”

I dip my finger into the creamy top on her coffee and dollop it on her nose. “That was not what you said while I was ploughing your mouth last night.”

She squeals as she wipes at her nose. “What was that for?”

“You’re as adorable as my penis. Had to add a little dollop of cum to the tip.”

She blinks hard to hide the roll of her eyes. “I can’t believe you just said that.”

I rest my elbows on the counter and gesture for her to join me. “Come here.”

She raises out of her seat and leans over the island. “Why?”

“So I can be the kind of fucker who’s as cheesy as grilled cheese.” I kiss the cream from her nose. “And so I can apologize for the twenty questions I asked that you weren’t ready for.”

“Rogue, I—"

“This isn’t me asking you again. You’ll tell me what you’re ready to when you’re ready to. I need you to trust that I won’t be like everyone in your life who has had their own agenda. Whatever it takes so that you won’t shut me out.”

“I don’t mean to.” She takes my hand and places it with hers against her face. “Please be patient with me.”

“Yeah, of course.” I suck in a breath. “Of course I will.”

“I promise I’m trying. I’m here. With you.”

“I know.” I lean in and steal a taste of her mouth. Smile as I brush my thumb over the gloss on her lower lip. It’s been a long time since I’ve opened my heart. Sure, I’ve embraced Summer, but it’s not the same as putting my entire fucking soul on the line like I find myself starting to do for Ivy. “I need to go to Rebel’s, so how about some breakfast and then I’ll drop you home?”

“I should probably get in contact with my mom,” she says. “Start setting some things straight with her.”

“Boundaries,” I say. That’s what she needs when it comes to her family. Steel and barbed wire boundaries.

“Yes.” She rests her chin on her fist. “So, breakfast?”
