It’s getting late and the bride and grooms make the announcement that they’re heading for the airport. We all line up and offer congratulations once more before they head for the door.

“Ryan will take you home whenever you’re ready to go.” I overhear Aspen tell Adeline.

Hell. No.

No one is taking my girl anywhere but me.

“I can drive her.” I pipe up.

“Oh, I don’t want to be an inconvenience.” She argues.

“You could never be an inconvenience, my love.” I say.

Aspen’s eyes are stretched so wide that it’s almost comical.

“Besides, I live right across the street from Roman and Flynn, so it’s on my way.” I finish.

She looks back to Aspen for confirmation and she just nods back.

“Um, ok. Thank you.” She says.

I offer her my hand and she hesitates but finally takes it. I lead her over to my car and open the door for her. I help her into the car before I round the hood and climb behind the wheel.

“All set, my love?”

“Yep.”

I merge into traffic and head towards home. I really do live across the street from Roman and Flynn’s place, although that’s more of a recent development. I know how Adeline and Aspen feel about each other. They’re family, sisters, and they won’t want to be far apart. I bought the townhouse the day after I did the investigation and I just moved in two weeks ago.

I’ve been able to watch as Adeline and Aspen leave for work every morning before I follow along after them. I run my own security company so I can set my own hours. I leave every day for lunch when Adeline gets off work and I trail along behind her, making sure she gets home safe. I’ve been dreaming about the day when I’ll get to walk beside her, holding her hand or draping my arm around her shoulders.

Today, I’m going to set us on the path that will get me that dream, will get me my girl.

CHAPTER 3

Adeline

I studyLincoln’s hands as he expertly steers the car into traffic. I don’t know anyone in New York who has their own car and Aspen and I rarely ride in them. It’s cheaper to just take the subway or walk. His car is nice though with buttery leather seats that hug my entire body and enough dials to make it look like we’re in a spaceship. It’s late and traffic isn’t too bad so I know we’ll be home soon. It’s going to be weird staying in Roman and Flynn’s house by myself.

“What are you thinking about?”

I’m startled from my thoughts as his deep voice rumbles into the silence that had stretched between us. I clear my throat before answering.

“Just thinking that it’s going to be weird staying in Roman and Flynn’s house by myself.”

“Are you going to be ok? I can stay with you or you can come to my place.” He offers instantly.

His concern and obvious protectiveness of me is refreshing and for a minute I think about taking him up on his offer. It would be nice to not be alone and it’s not like it would be a hardship, spending a couple of days with this handsome man.You barely know him, my mind whispers.

“I’ll be ok.” I say.

Lincoln’s shoulders drop and he seems disappointed in my answer. Looks like I wasn’t the only one who got excited about the idea of us staying together.

Lincoln turns the car onto our street and parks in front of a nice townhouse.

“This is me.”

I look up at the dark house but I can’t make out much in the moonlight. He wasn’t kidding when he said he lived across the street. His house is literally kitty-corner to Roman and Flynn’s.
