My client is still eating with his date so I lower the binoculars and sit back in my seat. I check out the restaurant and wonder if Adeline would like to come here sometime. Looks like a good place for a date, all romantic lighting and intimate seating.

I look up and it’s like my mind must have conjured her up. It’s like my body is wired to find her. She calls to me, like a light in the darkness, and I’m the moth that is powerless to get away. I watch as Adeline heads for the restaurant door, pulling it open and disappearing inside. I grab my binoculars and aim them back at the window, only this time I’m looking for my girl.

What is she doing at a romantic place like this? I finally catch a glimpse of her as she crosses the floor and heads to a table tucked away in the back. I have to lean forward to keep her in my eye line and I hear the binoculars creak under my grip when I see some guy stand up from the table and hug her.

What the hell? Who is that guy? Adeline is single. It was in my report and I’ve been following her for weeks. I’ve never seen this guy before. It must be new. Then it hits me. She’s on a date with some other guy and I’m just sitting here? Well, not for long.

I almost rip my car door off in my haste to break up this little date. I run across the street, dodging the traffic and race into the restaurant. I bypass the hostess stand and beeline right for their table. Neither of them looks up as I approach them and my hands tighten into fists when I see her date’s eyes flick to her perfect tits.

My girl dressed up for this. Wearing a tight black dress, cut low in the front and ending several inches above her knees. She’s got black, four-inch stilettos on and her hair is pinned back on the side, exposing her slender neck.

Her date can’t seem to keep his eyes off the low-cut front of her dress and I’m already shrugging out of my jacket. I drape it over Adeline’s shoulder as I come to a stop next to their table.

“Love.” I say, staring down into Adeline’s eyes.

Her eyes widen and then I watch as her pupils dilate, the black swallowing up the purple.

“Lincoln, what are you doing here?” She asks.

She tries to push my jacket off but I put my hand on her shoulder, holding it in place.

“I was just walking by and saw you. Mind if I talk to you for just a minute? Alone?” I ask when neither of them says anything.

I hold my hand out to her and she pauses but finally, takes it.

“I’ll be right back.” She tells her date.

Uh, no. She won’t.

CHAPTER 7

Adeline

I followLincoln out of the restaurant and when he turns to me, I open my mouth, ready to lay into him. Instead, he grabs my hand and drags me after him. I’m shocked into silence as we cross the road. Where the heck are we going?

That question is answered a second later when he unlocks his car and holds the door open for me.I guess we’re talking in his car, I think as I slide in. He closes the door and rounds the hood, sliding behind the wheel.

“What did you want to talk about?” I ask.

He starts the car and merges into traffic but doesn’t answer my question.

“What are you doing?!? Where are we going?” I ask as I scramble to pull my seatbelt on.

“I’m taking you home.”

“No, you’re not. I was on a date. I have to go back.”

I look behind us at the restaurant just as he turns the corner, heading for my house.

“Take me back!” I demand.

He doesn’t answer me and I can see his hands tighten on the steering wheel. He’s gripping it so tight that his knuckles have turned white.

“I need to go back.” I try again.

“No.”

That’s it. That’s all he has to say?
