I never gettired of hearing her say that. I cover her with our comforter and kiss her forehead as I watch her chest rise and fall. I go into the bathroom and get some water and Tylenol for her. With how much she drank tonight, she’s going to need it tomorrow.
I’m just about to leave the room when her phone rings. I had plugged it into the charger for her and I look at the screen to see it’s Bianca calling her. Bianca worked at the coffee shop with Aspen and the three girls are still close. It’s late for her to be calling and before I can second guess myself, I pick it up and answer the call.
“Bianca? It’s Lincoln, Adeline is asleep. Are you ok?”
“No.” She cries and instantly I’m in protective mode. I may not know this girl, but she’s important to Adeline and I would do anything to make sure that she is happy.
“What’s wrong?”
“There’s this guy. He asked me out and I said yes but then when we did go out, he was just so boring. Just kept talking about his family money and bragging about dumb stuff. He asked me out again but I said no and he hasn’t been taking it well. I think he’s stalking me. I’ve seen him following me and he comes into the coffee shop every day still. I don’t know what to do.”
“Where are you now?” I can hear street noise in the background.
“I ran down to the store to get some cold medicine and I think I just saw him. I’m scared to leave and walk home. Is there any way that you could come and walk me home? Adeline told me you run a security company and I just, I didn’t know who else to call.”
“My partner is close to where you live. His name is Bryson. I’m going to send him to make sure you get home safe. He’s 6’2”, blond hair, blue eyes, probably wearing a black t-shirt. I’m texting him now so he should be there in a couple of minutes but I’m going to stay on the line with you until he gets there.”
"Okay. Thank you.” She sniffs.
I’m not sure how much is from the cold and how much is because she’s upset. I send Bryson a quick text, letting him know what’s going on and he says he’s on his way. I stay on the line with Bianca until I hear Bryson in the background, introducing himself to her.
"Okay, Bianca, Bryson will make sure you’re safe. You’re in good hands.”
“Thank you.”
I hang up the phone and go back to my girl. She’s still asleep and I smile down at her as I watch her sleep. I go downstairs to take the puppies out one more time before slipping into bed beside my love.
I wake the next morning to Adeline’s groans. I sit up and hand her the Tylenol and water and she smiles gratefully at me as she swallows both.
“How are you feeling, love?”
“Like death.”
“The medicine will kick in soon. I can take care of the puppies. Why don’t you lay down and get some more sleep? I can bring you something to eat in a little bit.”
“That sounds amazing.” She says as she finishes the glass of water.
I rub her back as she sits up in bed and that’s when I see her phone.
“Bianca called last night. Seems she’s got a not so welcome admirer. I was going to head into the office today and try to dig into him a little bit. Are you going to be ok?”
“Is she ok?” She asks, panicked.
“Yeah, I had Bryson walk her home and make sure she was safe.”
"Okay, yeah, I think I’ll just be sleeping today so go make sure she’s ok. I love you.” She says as she lays back down.
“I love you too.”
I tuck her in before tugging on some clothes and backing out of the room. My girl is already back asleep and I smile as I close the door behind me.
I pull my phone out of my pocket as I walk down the stairs. I shoot a text to Bryson to see how last night went and to let him know that I’m going to dig into Bianca’s stalker today. I hook the dogs up and take them outside to go to the bathroom. They’re on real puppy food now and not having to feed them bottles has been amazing. They’re almost all the way potty trained now too. We just need to decide what we’re doing with all of them. I love Adeline and if she wants to keep them all then I’m on board. It’s just not very practical.
My phone buzzes as I’m putting their food down. I pull it out to see that Bryson has responded.
Bryson:I’ve got it covered. Enjoy the day with your girl.
