Shay put down her folder and left the lab. Presumably to go find Ms. Fuller.
“Okay. So you get reports and see video. Of what?”
“Well, most people just got agitated. Restless. More fidgeting. That sort of thing. Except.” He chewed on his lower lip for a moment. “Except for vampire and ghoul subjects.”
“What happened?”
His eyes were bulging now, and even I could smell the fear rolling off him. “They attacked… everything.”
“The fuck does that mean?” I demanded.
“Subjects were alone in the rooms. With a table and chairs. A magazine. We piped an aerosol of ARH14 into the room, and those subjects… destroyed the magazines. Ripped them to shreds. Broke the chairs. Flipped the table or slammed it into the walls. One ripped the camera down.”
“What happened to them?”
“Who?”
“The fucking subjects! Who the fuck do you think?”
“Oh. I—I assume they were allowed to recover before being sent home.”
A pit opened up in my stomach.
“You have no idea, do you?” I asked him.
Tears started to fall from Ewing’s eyes again. “They didn’t—they didn’t say anything bad happened,” he whispered.
“They didn’t tell you they were using it to make vampires attack shifters, either, did they?”
He started crying again, and I walked away, pulling on my ponytail. “Fuck.”
My phone rang, and when I saw it was Raj, I answered. “Hart. Your shit as fucked up as it is here?”
“You have no fucking idea,” Raj replied, his voice sounding tired and wrung out. “What do you have?”
“The scientist who made the beta blockers and the fucking vampire bait. You?”
“A goddamn mass grave.”
“Fuck.”
“Can you go get Ward?”
Drew chose that moment to walk into the lab. “I have to go get Raj a medium,” I told him. “Any chance I can borrow your car?” Mine was at the RPD.
Drew nodded and handed me his keys, so I took them and left, pulling my phone out as I went.
“Hello?” Ward sounded a little exasperated.
“Sorry, but I’m about to make your day a lot worse.”
He sighed. “Why?”
“Raj has a mass grave.”
“How long?”
“Ten max.”
