“Run.”

Everything went cold. With a shiver, she whipped around to find him gone.

* * *

Fix the gravity.

That was all she had to do.

Oh, and fight off an alien who was physically impossible to defeat. Not too hard, right? She was the one who’d escalated the fight, knowing he didn’t possess the ability to back down.

Her limbs trembled. For the millionth time, she nearly lost her nerve.

She needed her tools. The sounds of him turning around overhead sent her high-tailing it out of the cockpit. It was like being submerged in mud. She could never move fast enough without gravity.

She entered the kitchen just as he burst into the room behind her, charging every molecule of air with visceral intention. Just as he shot after her, she slammed the door in his face.

Her heart pounded in her ribcage, eager to burst out and leave the rest of her behind. The sounds of him trying to break through kicked her back on track.

The Selkie rumbled with bouts of turbulence, a bone-rattling noise thrumming from ceiling to floor in heavy waves. She sought out her tools in the engine room. Just as she spotted them, another thunderous shudder made every light flicker out, plunging her into an eerie darkness.

Goddammit.

She broke out in a sweat, the sound of her labored breath echoing loudly. Fighting down the terror, she pulled herself along the wall. What if he found her here—took her here? Try as she might not to dwell on it, the pitch-black darkness set a perfect canvas for the horrors of her imagination.

The hull creaked and groaned, reminiscent of a sinking ship. Extremely unsettling. Her clammy hands searched the shelves.

And then every hair on her body stood on end.

The flashing outline of her hunter drifted through the engine room, sending her into a state of electrified terror.

Oh—fuck—

She hadn’t heard him enter. He was just… there, somehow.

How?

Watching him drift silently like a shark before the room went dark, she swallowed down her panic and continued. There was something indescribably wrong about someone so massive moving in pure, lethal silence.

Once it fell dark again, it was dead silent. All she heard was her heart, her breath, hersweat, and the dizzying sensation that he was coming for her.

Inch by inch, she sought a nook and buried herself inside, hiding like she was terrified of him. It wasn’t mind over matter. Hewasterrifying.

‘You’re not a human, are you?’

He’d wanted to do this then. He meant to do it now.

A loud rumble startled a yelp out of her. The room lit up, revealing Caligher to her right. Biting back a cry, she tucked her knees in and prayed he hadn’t spotted her. Sweat beaded her face as it went dark again. The sharp, provocative smell of sex signals flooded the air.

Fuck—fuck—fuck, she knew it was over. Knew with every vibrating cell.

And then—without a sound, he just left.

Opened a regular bulkhead door and left.

Every muscle in her sagged with relief. All her bodily functions started up. She couldn’t think. The close call had beentooclose—it left her teeming and shaking with fiery adrenaline.

Think, Lucca, please think.
