“Wanted?!I can’t believe it. You planned this!”

She dropped his arm like hot garbage, staggering back to get a look at the truth on his face. There it was. He must have been planning this for quite some time.

“We had a good flight, Lucca. Better than I deserved. I’m happy I got to fly with you, even knowing it would end.”

More tears swelled in her eyes. In his, too.

“No. You were… just trying to transport me home and…” She choked down every sob that tried to break up her words. She couldn’t breathe… her lungs wouldn’t work. Her heart was cracking, shattering, making its vast emptiness known. “This whole time.”

The truth in his eyes was unbearable.

“Yes,” he confessed.

“No!” she cried in a heightened, teary voice. Rage and grief colored every word.“I never agreed to that!”

She wasn’t giving up on their relationship. Fuck him for even thinking of pulling this shit last minute. He was hers whether he liked it or not, even if that meant he had some serious apologizing to do.

He studied her more carefully. This was the sort of fight where hurtful words couldn’t be recalled once spoken.

“Lucca… you know where this is heading. Once I reach that ship, everything is going to end. There will be no coming back from that.”

“If there’s no coming back from it, then try this, Cal.Don’t. Go.You keep thinking things are done and decided—just because we’ve made mistakes, but we’re still alive. We have our ships. We still haveeverything!” she snarled. “And I swear to god if you’d just open your eyes, you would see it like I do.”

“All I see are the secrets we’ve kept from each other. You don’t trust me. I don’t trust you. You couldn’t tell me you were human—”

“Oh!That!” She kicked her head back with ironic, angry laughter. “Because you really were the first fucking person I wanted to tell. You tremendous asshole!”Whydid he have to be the one she’d fallen in love with? Why did it feel like there were knives in her heart? Her hand clutched at the appendage like it was mortally wounded.

His eyes hardened. “You didn’t tell me that a warship was coming to kill us all until it was too late. I know we’re both responsible. I bear half the responsibility of frightening you into keeping that secret—but the secret still caused damage.”

“Then we fix it! We can still fix it!” She felt her sanity slipping as she fought with him.

He did that thing she hated—talking at the same time as her. “And you can’t even say you’re in love with me unless you think I won’t hear it.”

“IAMin love with you!” she yelled.

“So am I!” he yelled back.

Those words made the tempo rise by half a step.

She breathed raggedly, as did he. They stared at one another with mixed rage and pain and a million other things.

“Are you sure?” she gritted, heart racing so hard that her chest was vibrating. “You have a pretty fucked up way of showing it.”

“Believe me, Lucca, I know.” His eyes were wide with agreement.

A hard exhale fell from her.

They were massively fucked. But theyhadto find the way through because shecould not lose himeven if he was royally pissing her off.

“You pretend to be outraged over the things I’ve kept from you—things I did to protect myself—but you’ve kept a lot from me,” she said.

“I’m trying to do right by you,” he said tightly.

“Dobetter!”

His expression pinched. Spreading his hand out to indicate the portal, he said, “Thisis how I do better. You know as well as I do. We don’t fit in each other’s worlds. It was good while it lasted, but it wasfantasy.”

“No,” she said, wavering. One fat tear beaded up and over. Her sinuses had that terrible underwater feeling.
