But he stood there with a goading expression, deriving some sadistic enjoyment from their conversation. Sure, he hadn’t destroyed her ship, but this was almost worse.

“It would beat listening to you creep around constantly,” he said. “It’s stifling, you know?”

“If you don’t like the atmosphere on my ship, you’re welcome to jump off at any time. There’s the exit!” She waved an arm in the airlock’s direction.

His sharp smile wasn’t kind, but his eyes engaged and snagged her. She couldn’t pull her stare away once he had her. “It’s my ship now, and you’re my prisoner.” His tail coiled in a slow and curious fashion as he gave her another up-and-down look. “Of course, you’re also welcome to jump off.”

She shot to her feet, hands fisted.

“The fuck you just say—”

“It might be interesting to see.”

His words had the most alarming way of short-circuiting past the guilt she’d been drowning in, and now he’d gone straight for pissing her off.Again.

He laughed, eying her with speculation. Just as she was about to lash out, he said, “Come here.”

“What?”

“Here,” he repeated. “Come here.”

The mere act of movement seemed impossible, but she mustered the strength to move toward him, her bare feet pattering on the metal floor.

Once within range, he tugged her arm to him, grip strong but gentle on her wrist. She stared at it, frozen. How was he so physical with her? How was he not repulsed? His thumb slowly brushed her wrist, choking a tiny gasp from her lungs.

His gaze dropped to where they were connected, studying that touch. His eyes then traveled up her body, setting her ablaze with his intense scrutiny, his indecipherable expression, and the simple proximity and differences between their bodies. Standing toe to toe with him… he was massive.

Massive and attractive and the color of opals and geodes—and he smelled divine. It was unreasonable, impossible to keep her cool under any of these conditions.

“When you said you were attracted to me… was that a lie?” he asked.

Embarrassment washed over her. She licked her lips, averting her stare. The truth was blazing through her nerves.

“No…”

“But youhavelied to me.”

“…Yes.”

“What do you look like when you lie? Show me.”

“What?”

She met his eyes, not comprehending.

“Tell me a lie to my face,” he said. Some idea brightened his features and he added, “Tell me you’re not a human.”

Her heart sputtered like a dying engine before kicking up. His demand made her feel so many twisted things. Dread and excitement. Shame and disbelief. Mostly a general sense of,what the actual hell?

“Do it,” he said, giving her wrist a little squeeze.

She shook her head. “I’m not saying that.”

“Why not?”

“Because I’m not. I just—don’t like lying.” She’d told herself she would never lie to him again.

“That didn’t stop you from doing it before,” he said, still holding her wrist hostage. Her skin tingled as his voice reverberated through her.
