His rant continued as if it washisbusiness, hisproblem. “What the hell kind of people live in a ship but don’t let you fly? What the hell kind of place did you come from?”

“A crappy place!” she bit out.

“Well it isn’t right! And you shouldn’t accept it!”

“What’do you want me to do, Cal? Go back in time and change where I came from? Should I pick you up anything else while I’m there?”Like some fucking manners?

“It’s just not right!” Caligher insisted.

She needed him to let this go. She needed him to never bring it up again. She needed money and directions and fuel and to not be pinned in between so many stupid things, and none of that was about to happen so she was starting to feel angry. Helpless. She didn’t like that at all.

“Why won’t you let the nice man fix your ship?” she asked.

Morwong involved himself readily. “Yes, Caligher, we want to know why.”

Caligher made a frustrated noise, then said, “Fine, point taken. Does anyone need to drink? Because I am feelingextremelysober.”

For a second, Morwong sounded like he was on the edge of some argument, but he dropped it. “Rini’s behind the bar. Both of you are coming down, yes?”

“I am,” said Caligher. “Lucca?”

She hated this. “I can’t,” she said.

Morwong hummed in disappointment. “Truly?”

“Don’t take it personally, I’ve been trying for days,” Caligher said. After steering her to a wall where she could safely hook her ship up, he began to lurch for the sky. “I’m bringing down the pirates, but that’s it. Then I’m leaving my ship parked next to Lucca’s. Under no circumstances are you allowed to tow it.”

“Fine… fine.”

“Lucca.”

“Hm?”

“If you hand my ship over behind my back, I’m going to take that as an open invitation to commandeer yours for my own purposes.”

She swallowed loudly. “Not… touching your ship.”

One by one their comms blipped offline.

CHAPTER2

CALIGHER

Pure nothingness swallowed the air and noise as the hatch cranked open to space. All that remained was the gentle pull of electricity and light. Caligher lived for those moments, for the pure and unobstructed clarity.

Lucca’s pink research ship was tethered to the wall before him, housing some great mystery. He was eager to solve the puzzle… but he wasn’t in any sort of rush. Wondering was half the joy.

Nevertheless, his spark hummed in his veins, filling his mind with questionable impulses.

Jump, it urged.

Physically, it would have been so easy.

Do it. It’s right there. Jump!

He restrained himself. Whether he teased it or not, Lucca hadn’t invited him over. She’s been insistent that her ship was off-limits.

Hewouldfigure it out soon enough. He couldn’t cure his overactive thoughts and at some point, he would stumble upon some answers.
