“Let’s just give them a little… discouragement for now,” she suggested, getting started on the next phase of her plan. “I’m taking care of it.”

“Stop! Stop it, human! What are you doing?!”

“Calm him down, Caligher. Don’thurthim. Just… make him chill for a minute. I’m working here.”

A minute later, the ship in the distance could no longer move. Their engines were stalled and they’d have a hell of a time starting it back up. They could put out a distress signal while the Selkie made its getaway.

“Annnnd done. Caligher, could you send our friend back home?”

“He’ll keep coming after us.”

“Yeah, well, he can damn well try. Kick him out. Andyou—whatever your name is. We’re not your enemies. Save your energy for the real fight. Nowgo.”

“Idecide when to send him back,” Caligher retorted.

“No, you don’t. We’re not staying here and getting held up by yourrevenge fantasies.”

“You don’t get to decide that, Lucca. He’s my prisoner now. Just likeyouare.”

“Ohfuck you,” she jeered.

“Can’t right now, sweetheart,” he said dismissively.

Rage flashed through her. “I will throttle you with your own tail. I will beat you to death with it!”

“Will you?” he taunted, shoving the other alien toward a closet. “I’d love to see you try.”

“You enormous asshole.”

For a minute, he ignored her, stopping to look over the tear in the hallway. “Lucca, go get the repair kit.”

“No.” After a brief pause, she added, “Go fuck yourself.”

He broke into laughter. “You want to spite yourself to spite me? That’s cute.”

“Go get it yourself!”

“I’d hate to stop hearing all your bratty comments when your air runs out.”

“You goddamninstigator,” she raged. She was typing, not thinking. Just as he crossed over the line, she brought a door partway down, pinching his tail to the floor. She slammed her fist on the chair, shouting a victorious, “Eat it!”

Caligher made a pitiful, surprised sound just as his captive broke free. She was quick to separate them—quick to open the exit for the other guy.

“You.” She addressed the stranger through the ship’s comm system. “Get the fuck off my ship or your friend’s gonna get it. I swear to god, you come after us again, and Caligher’s not the one you’ll want to be afraid of! I am a god damnnightmare.”

Surprisingly, it worked. He made a break for it and as soon as he exited, she set the ship back in motion.

She watched with detached interest as Caligher tried to free his tail. “Yeah,” she said casually, “your tail’s not the first victim that door’s claimed.” He shot a sharp, questioning look at the camera and she clarified. “It’s been known not to close all the way.”

“Lucca,” he grunted. She had him pinned pretty good. She headed to her room and found a dry suit to wear, shucking the wet one away. “What are you doing?”

“Reminding you that you’re not the only one who calls the shots. You think you can bully me around on my own ship? Always remember, you’re here because Iallowit.”

“Let off on my tail,” he demanded.

“Why? So you can assert your dominance some more?”

He barked a single chuckle. “You think you’re in control? Let’s put that to the test.”
