I had pushed them away for a long time. At first, because I was scarred by the way I’d been ripped away from my family. And then, because of my awful dreams.

But there was a chance that I could maybe become friends with them, and honestly, I wanted that. Even though it sounded really out of my reach.

The next fae replaced Clevv after a bit more time had passed, and then a new fae was sitting down next to me.

Time moved quickly. The fae were mostly friendly, though three of them were painfully awkward. I did my best to keep the conversation moving with all of them (despite my own awkwardness), and learned a hell of a lot more about the fae than I had ever known.

The sun had setwhen I finally made it through the last man, and then they all made their way back over and reformed the group they had been in earlier. I chatted with a few of them, appreciating the new, relaxed feel that the group had taken on after I got to know them all a little.

I wasn’t ready to choose one of them to be my mate permanently—that much, I was positive about—but I did need to connect myself to another man to free myself from Priel.

And I was really hoping the end of our connection would be the end of my damned sex dreams about him.

When my stomach growled, all of us made our way to a cave nearby where we could eat. It was shaped the same way Priel’s place was, with a big drop into it and a climbing-wall leading out. The inside held a large kitchen, though, with a pantry of sorts built into the stone walls and filled to the brim with food.

Across from the kitchen, there were a few massive cushion-things that reminded me of large bean bags. Those of the men who didn’t start cooking settled onto them, still talking and laughing. They were discussing a hunt they had done together, so I mostly ignored them.

My mind went back to the hot moment with Priel earlier.

The way he’d had me pinned against the wall, and his body’s clear desire for me.

My heart clenched as I remembered his disgust with the idea of having sex with me.

Fuck, I needed to get away from him.

Not just distance-wise, but emotionally.

My gaze slid over the men before it settled on the flirty Clevv, who had joked about me being his future mate.

He felt me staring, and flashed me a grin.

The man had offered to let me use him. He didn’t care whether or not I wanted permanence—which I didn’t, yet.

He was the perfect choice.

I let the decision to form a temporary bond with him settle in my mind as we all ate together. The food was incredible, andsodifferent than what I’d eaten back in the Stronghold. It was nice to try something new, honestly.

And after we were done, I was ready to try somethingelsenew.

Making out with a fae.

It was go time.

Three

The other men trickled out, some of them headed for their homes to sleep for the night. Others went out to guard the land we were in, though they reassured me that no one was stupid enough to waltz in without assuming they’d lose their head.

But Clevv stayed, and I did too, until we were the only ones left.

Swallowing my nerves, I walked over to the bean bag he was pretending to doze on.

His eyes opened, and he gave me a slow, animalistic grin. “Decided to take me up on my offer?”

I forced myself to bite back a smile. “I did.”

He sat up, maneuvering so he was sitting on the edge of the bean bag with his feet pressed against the floor.

I stepped closer, and his hands remained on his knees.
