My arms wrapped around my stomach, and I hunched in on myself. I wanted to be the kind of chick who ran into a fight and broke it up, but I just… wasn’t.

Five more thuds sounded, one after another.

“What happened?” another male hound growled.

“Help me get Priel off of him,” another one ordered.

All of them launched into the fight.

My arms squeezed my abdomen painfully tight, and I watched in awful, tense fear as they wrestled Priel away from Clevv. Clevv collapsed to the ground immediately after Priel was removed from him, and I hoped like hell that he wasn’t dead.

“North,” one of the men wrestling Priel snarled. “Come over here, now.”

His command had me freezing in place even more completely.

What if Priel hurt me?

What if—

“He’s going to kill us if you don’t get over here,” another man snarled.

That was enough to get even my terrified ass off the beanbag.

I hurried over to them.

One of them grabbed my arm, rolling away as he yanked me downward. He shoved me right on top of the fighting Priel, his gigantic hands pressing me into the furious hellhound now bucking beneath me.

My long, dark hair hit him in the face, and he froze.

A slow, feral snarl escaped him, and my whole body tensed.

His hands landed roughly on my hips.

They were in exactly the same place Clevv’s had been, but the feeling was vastly different. He didn’t just touch me because he liked the way I felt—he gripped me possessively, like I belonged to him.

Like he would kill anyone who tried to take me from him.

That had to be in my head. I knew it had to be in my head.

But I still couldn’t stop the warmth in my chest because of it.

“We have to get out of here,” one of the other men said in a low voice. “Someone grab Clevv.”

“North,” one of the men said.

Priel snarled furiously, and his needy grip on my hips tightened painfully. I didn’t hate the pain, though. It made me feel more alive than I’d felt in the entirety of the eighteen months I’d been in Vevol.

There was a moment of silence, and then the same man said, “He won’t hurt you. His beast side has taken over, and reason won’t work. But he won’t hurt you.”

I hadn’t thought he would hurt me, but the words still made me feel better.

Still, I tried not to react to them. Priel didn’t seem to like the other men talking to me in his currentstate.

I remained where I was as I heard sounds that had to be the other hellhounds climbing out of the cave. My face was on Priel’s chest, and I could hear his heart pounding furiously.

Despite his stillness, the man wasn’t calm. Not even close.

A few minutes passed, and then he roughly rolled us both. I was pinned below him, his flaming eyes staring down at me while almost every hard inch of him pressed against me.
