Did he actually remember doing that?

I had been pretty damn sure he thought I was the most uninteresting person ever. He hadn’t even bothered flirting with me, like he did the other women.

That didn’t stop me from having sex dreams about him.

“Before.”

If he questioned how perfectly I remembered those times and our interactions in particular, I’d make another attempt at kneeing him in the balls.

“You should’ve told me.” His words were nearly a snarl.

My snapped response came out before I could think it through. “Why the hell would I do that? The other girls got pretty magical tattoos; I got awful-looking burns. And you werefarfrom interested in me or my life.”

His eyes narrowed. “Burns?”

The emphasis he put on the “s” made me curse silently.

I glared back at him, literally biting my tongue to stop myself from saying things I would regret.

“Where’s your other one?” he demanded.

“None of your damn business. And if you try to strip me to find it, I will scream until one of the other fae shows up and kills you forhurtingme.”

His eyes burned with fury, and he grabbed his shorts off the ground, turning as he yanked them up his body. “I would never fucking do that.”

“Then back off.” I spun around, stalking to the bathroom and shutting myself inside. The door locked behind me, and I collapsed against it. My eyes were stinging, and my body was shaking.

My burn-bruises werebrands?

Special markings that somehow represented Vevol?

What the hell did that mean?

When I eventually calmed myselfdown enough to step back out into the room, I found Priel sitting on the edge of the bed, tapping his foot harshly on the floor. I’d come up with a plan that would get me away from the bastard. It wasn’t an ideal plan, but it was a hell of a lot better than spending the next few days alone with him in his home.

His gaze jerked up to me as I stepped out, and darkened when he saw me.

“I’ve decided to face the rest of the fae and look for an actual mate to end the fighting,” I told him bluntly. “Thanks for trying to protect me, but I’m done with this whole fake-mate shitshow.”

Forcing myself to remain calm, I crossed the room until I was standing right below the hole we’d fallen into to get into the place.

When I eyed the wall, I realized there were handholds and footholds of sort.

Of course the fiery bastard had to climb a literal rock wall to get out of his house.

“You can’t do that.” Priel’s fingers wrapped around my wrist as I reached toward the wall.

I flashed him a glare. “Why the hell not?”

“Because if anyone sees a glimpse of either of those brands, you’ll become worth a lot more than any of the other women.”

I blinked.

Women were the most valuable thing in Vevol. There were only twenty of us, tohundredsof men. And while we weren’t treated like objects, or property, or money, we could get almost anything we wanted just by batting our eyes at the men.

“Why would that make meworth more?”
