“Vevol branded you. Shechoseyou. Your power will be far more intense than any of the other women. There are only two of us male fae with brands, North. I discovered and opened the portal to the human world. The unseelie king turns his half of the world into an icy mess to enforce the borders between our territories.”

Shit.

So the markings were even worse than I thought.

That sounded like just my luck.

Priel’s gaze was steady as he stared at me. “You need to learn how to access whatever power Vevol gave you when she branded you, so you can protect yourself, before you even consider choosing a mate.”

I scoffed and pulled my wrist from his grip.

He let me go, that time.

I argued, “It sounds like what Ineedto do is choose a mate before word gets out about my magic.”

His eyes burned hotter. “Our supposed connection will protect you. None of the other fae will take you from me; they know that doing so could convince me not to open the portal between our worlds, and they’re desperate to find their other halves.”

I tossed a hand toward him. “They don’t even believe that we’re together. If they did, we would’ve had sex by now, and they wouldn’t be challenging you. Right?”

His jaw clenched.

Yeah, I had thought so.

The only thing we had done to create the beginning of our “mate bond” was a quick peck on the lips. It had been awkward as hell, and I’d shut myself away in my room for a month afterward so I wouldn’t have to see him again.

Seeing him, kissing him…

Well, my unconscious self already had a crush on the guy. The sex in my dreams was unreal, and there wasn’t a chance in hell that it could ever happen like that in real life, even if Priel was interested in me.

Which he was not, nor had he ever been.

I went on. “Right now, they’re all chasing me because they don’t think I’ve made a real connection. If I can make that happen with someone and my scent actually changes, would most of the fae back off?”

The fierce clench of his jaw told me that my hunch was right.

“If these brands are as important as you claim, and I’m really in danger because of them, then I need to act. Right?”

“Right. But there are many ways toact.” Priel ground the words out.

“Well, I’ve already made up my mind.” I spun around, stalking toward the rock wall. My toes found the first hold, and I pulled myself up a few inches before his hands latched onto my waist.

He plucked me off the wall and set me on my feet, before stepping up close. Our chests pressed together, and I inhaled sharply at the contact.

“The fae already believe I’m pursuing you, at least somewhat. They know that our connection has begun to form, even if they don’t truly believe we have a relationship. If safety is what you seek,Iam the answer. Not another male.” His voice was a low, harsh growl.

Maybe if he’d been asking because he wanted me, I would’ve agreed.

Maybe if he’d told me he was attracted to me, or called me his, I would’ve kissed the hell out of him.

Because he didn’t, I ignored the flashes from my dreams that rolled through my mind with his ideas.

I opened my mouth to tell him to back off, but then his hips trapped me to the wall.

My mind went blank when I felt his erection against my belly.

“My pack doesn’t believe I’ve claimed you because my scent isn’t on your body. We change that, and we’ll earn the pack’s belief. They’ll spread the word faster than I ever could.”

“How would we do that?” I argued. “I’m not having sex with you.”
