“I like it.” He nodded his approval.

“You have ink here already,” I pointed out, picking up his hand and showing him the black shape on his finger. The larger tattoo had been designed to look like multiple vines snaking over his fingers, so the color was solid on the bottom chunk of that finger.

“I’ll do it in silver. It’ll stand out, and remind me of the first time you were in my home, when you accidentally stabbed yourself.”

I rolled my eyes at him, but couldn’t hide my grin.

He lifted my hand to his lips, pressing a kiss to my fourth finger. “Yours, I’ll do in black ink.”

I figured he would; the man clearly had a thing for black ink, and I was definitely on board with it.

“Alright. What was the tattoo you were imagining?” I checked. “What would be your ideal way to mark me as yours?”

“Fire, here.” His knuckle brushed over my chest, directly over my heart.

I liked the idea. Flames were a huge part of my life now that I was in Vevol. Putting them over my heart would represent me, the way I was changing, and my relationship with Priel, too.

“Deal.” Let’s do it.

Fire burned in his eyes as he hauled me up onto the counter. “Wait here.”

He disappeared into his art closet, coming back a minute later with a small box of ink and another one of the tattoo gun things I’d stabbed myself with before.

We were both quiet as he burned the gun’s end, cleaning it easily.

The sex had been fun, and we were used to talking, teasing, and sassing each other. The mating bond had been building between us for so long that sealing it just felt like the next level for our relationship.

But tattoos… they were visible, and permanent.

And the moment we were about to share felt sort of sacred because of that.

“I’ll show you how it works on myself, first,” Priel explained to me, lifting his eyes to mine.

He was giving me an out. Making sure I knew he didn’t expect me to go through with it if I didn’t want to.

“Alright.” I’d let him do things his way, so he knew I wasn’t going to change his mind.

We were both silent as magic swelled within the room. It was so thick I could see it a little; a transparent flame-like cloud swirling around Priel.

He placed his hand on my thigh, using me as a table, then lowered the needle to his finger.

I watched in shocked interest as he used the needle to slowly cut through the air above his hand. The ink sizzled against his skin as his fire and magic worked together to slowly and permanently draw a cursive P over his finger.

I’d known he’d use a P for Polaris before he even started.

Full names were where the magic was at, after all.

It took a while, but eventually he put the gun down, and the magic in the room faded. He tensed and relaxed his fingers a few times, before putting his hand back on my thigh.

My throat swelled when I saw the long, looping silver letter on his ring finger.

“Do mine.” I handed him my palm.

He chuckled softly, tilting me and the appendage a little as he set it down on the counter. A few minutes later, he began.

I watched every second of his work, transfixed by the miracle of it. He was incredible. I had no idea how he even tapped into a person’s magic like that.

“Tapping into magic is easier than you think,” he murmured to me, as he finished the letter and lifted his machine away from my hand.
