The others shifted too, and as a group, we took off. Calian and January met Ervo, Mare, and Dots in the sky while the rest of us moved on the ground. Teris caught up to us, running too.

I’d never seen the basilisks or how they moved while up close and personal, but they were fascinating. And strangely, not as creepy as I’d thought. Thicker around than me or Priel, they were absolutely massive, their bodies built out of pure muscle. Despite their size, they moved just as quickly as the rest of us, their bodies zigging and zagging smoothly.

A bitof time passed before Priel growled at me.“Do you hear that?”

I frowned.“Hear what?”

“Someone’s followed us. I need you to shift and run while I take care of it.”

I growled back,“By yourself? No way.”

“I’ll be fine. Teris or Nev will break away to help, too.”

I stared out at the forest as we ran, moving insanely fast. Though memories of the awful way I’d hit the ground when I jumped out of that car assaulted me, I pushed them away.

I wasn’t the same weak human girl.

I was strong, now.

I could do this.

Starting the shift, I threw myself off of Priel’s back.

All four of my paws hit the ground, and victory coursed through my veins.

“That’s right,”Priel growled back at me, his voice somewhere between satisfied and proud.“You’re incredible, Gorgeous. Now stay with the rest of the pack, so I don’t have to spank that sexy little ass when we stop.”

I huffed out a snort, shaking my head at my mate and his steamy playfulness as he darted in the wrong direction.

Sure enough, Nev broke away from the group too.

Teris remained on the opposite side from me, protecting Sunny’s scaly side. I noticed Lian fly lower, as if also responding to the threat, getting ready to protect the rest of us if we needed him to.

My heart swelled at the sight.

We were a damn family.

Snarls erupted behind me, and I tried to look over my shoulder, but didn’t see anything.

A few minutes later, a whole group of hellhounds caught up with us.

My surprised gaze flickered over each of them as recognition kicked in.

They were Priel’s ex-pack.

“They still owe Mare their lives,”Priel growled to me, as he caught back up to us.“The bastards aren’t leaving unless we kill them, and considering Mare ended up on her knees to stop Ervo from ripping their throats out, that’s not an option.”

“Damn,”I murmured, glancing up at the sky.

Mare didn’t seem like herself, but at least she had protection.

“Well, this has been quite an interesting day,”I finally said.

Priel’s chuckle made me grin.“One of many, I imagine.”

My heart warmed.“I’m in love with you,”I told him, not wanting to keep it quiet.

He loved me too; I didn’t doubt that.
