I nearly groaned, and saw North flash her a glare.

“Then I will abdicate to North,” the leader said smoothly. “Assuming she is a harsh, and not a life-bringer. The life-bringers have their own ruler.”

“Where is she?” Sunny checked, looking around at the women who seemed nearly done with packing their things.

I was doing the same.

“Hidden away, as she will be until we know she and the others are properly protected and have multiplied across our land.” The leader’s voice was hard, with that answer. “Now, we shall go.”

“What’s your name?” I asked her.

“Fovea,” she said, pronounced fo-vee-uh.

“You don’t give out your full names, though, right?” North asked.

Fovea looked at her, aghast. “Of course not.”

Well, at least one thing as we knew it hadn’t changed.

The women finished packing soonafter that, and then the ex-humans and I shifted with all of them.

Rather than taking them to the edge of the lake, where we had camped with the Wild Hunt guys, we were heading right back to the new Stronghold. That had been North’s call, after talking to Priel, and I thought it was a good one. If we stopped on the edge of the lake for a few days, the women would have the time and space to recreate their awful class system while trying to incorporate us into it, which none of us wanted.

I flew Sunny and North back to the lake, landing on the beach so they could climb off and run the rest of the way. North was already in Priel’s arms before her feet hit the dirt, and he was growling at her. Probably cursing, too.

They were so damn adorable.

January and Lian were gone, already headed back to the Stronghold. Them getting there early was also good call, I thought, so that the fae ladies wouldn’t try to abduct her in the name of life-bringers everywhere.

Ervo stood next to the other unmated men, glowering at me.

His usually-calm façade had vanished, and visible fury replaced it.

I tried to take off before he could reach me, but Sunny wasn’t far enough for me to spread my wings yet, and his massive hand wrapped possessively around the back of my thick, scaly neck.

“You fly with me, female,” he snarled at me.

I jerked away, shifting forms as I did.

That turned out to be a bad call, because that hand he had wrapped around the back of my neck was much more threatening when I was so much smaller than him.

“No way. Look.” I gestured to the sky, at the literalhundredsof women above us. “I’m even less special now. No one will threaten me.”

“The other women are an unknown factor, and I don’t trust them with your safety,” he said. “Youwillride me.”

I almost laughed, but managed to stop myself.

The bastard definitely didn’t know he was making a sexual command.

“That is not your call,Viervo,” I said, emphasizing the first part of his name. The part that made the word a magical connection between us. “And besides, the women up there are watching for the strongest, fiercest men tobreed with. You don’t want meriding youright now.”

He stepped closer to me, his grip on the back of my neck tightening as my face tilted upward so our eyes met.

My chest rose and fell rapidly, my body flushing under his attention.

His voice was measured when he finally said, “Those females change nothing for me. You will fly on my back, or you won’t fly at all.”

My eyebrows shot upward. “Is that athreat?”
