Though I didn’t need to, I grabbed the bar of scratchy soap by the sink and started scrubbing at my hands quickly. They weren’t dirty, but it gave me something to do, and sort of distracted me from my problem.

Which was waking up in bed with a man I had ultimate, strong, hot feelings for. And his hands had been touching me, in ways I really, really liked.

And…

Shit, I needed to focus on my soap. If only it wasn’t sosoapy.

Eventually I gave up on my hands, used the facilities, and finally emerged from the bathroom.

Ervo was already cooking again.

My stomach growled hopefully as I went back to the book of poetry I hadn’t managed to focus on the night before. I feigned thumbing through it as I called across the room, “How are you feeling?”

“Better,” he admitted. “Much better.”

Thank the damned heavens.

“Think we can go back today, then?” I asked.

“Yes.”

Phew.

That was a major relief.

I wasn’t sure I could manage another wake-up like today’s without rubbing myself all over him like an animal in heat.

“We’ll eat, and then head out. If we’re lucky, no one realized we were gone.”

“I can tell them we got lost,” I said, though I questioned myself immediately afterward.

Ervo’s silence told me no one would believe that, but he didn’t bring it up again, so I didn’t either.

I kept my eyes on the book while we ate, reading silently, and then slid it back on the shelf while he took my plate back to his sink for me. When I offered to clean up, he gave me a simple, neutral, “No.”

So, I watched him.

And wondered how the hell I’d gotten unlucky enough to have feelings for the one male in all of Vevol who only wanted me to be his sister.

We leftwhen he finished with the dishes, and this time, I flew on my own. I could smell his scent on my scales, as we flew, which did strange things to my head. I tried to ignore that, though.

The Stronghold wasa chaotic mess when we arrived. The female fae seemed to have set up shop inside it and around it, so the thing was surrounded by their colorful tents.

I’d put money on the life-bringers being locked inside, though.

Ervo didn’t try to stop me when I slipped away from him, weaving around the tents on my way to the door. People were coming and going, and no one paid me a spare glance, so I didn’t even have to lie about getting lost.

When I finally made it into the building, the human chick who was usually guarding it was gone.

In her place were four big, mean-looking fae ladies.

They glared at me, but waved me in.

I silently headed up the stairs, my chest feeling tight as I went.

I found Sunny and Dots back in our room already, both of them sprawled across their beds like we’d never left.

And shit, Ihatedthat idea.
