“We’ll come too,” North told him.

No one protested that, so the four of them took off…

Leaving me alone, with so damn many men.

“Thank you for flying with me,” the man I’d crashed into earlier said, still grinning at me. “It was the highlight of my century.”

My face heated. Mostly out of guilt that I’d only done it to make Ervo jealous. “You’re welcome. I had fun, too.”

“Can I bring you a cake, later?” he asked me.

A barely-audible growl vibrated the chest of the phoenix behind me.

I hesitated.

Agreeing to that would be telling him that I was interested, or even just considering being interested in him.

The memory of Clevv’s claws digging into my skin had my agreement dying in my throat.

“Ask again after things are settled with the female fae?” I said, instead.

He beamed at me. “Of course.”

Knowing that he wasn’t going to walk away from me, I nodded, and then turned and begun striding in the opposite direction as if I knew where I was going.

Ervo followed me, of course.

I felt more sets of eyes on me, and a quick glance to my left and right proved that I’d regained my hellhound guard dogs.

Damn, I needed to figure out a way to shake them. Somehow, they always managed to catch up to me soon after I landed. I knew they could move fast, but it was frustrating to never be able to get away from them.

An idea hit me, and I halted.

Ervo stopped as soon as I did, his chest meeting my back firmly and his hand landing on my hip.

The touch made my stomach twist.

“I figured out a way for you to pay your life debt,” I told the hounds in the forest around me.

They emerged from the trees, and Ervo’s grip on me tightened.

“My life is at risk because of the female fae,” I told them.

They tensed, like they expected me to ask them to start murdering the women.

“I want you to talk to the harsh ones. Follow them. Get to know them. Become their friends. They haven’t been around men in a long time, and it sounds like things were really different back when they used to be a part of fae society. So you can repay me by building friendships with the women, to help them understand why humans want real relationships with the men we bind ourselves to, and so that they don’t try to lock us away or anything.”

There was a beat of silence.

“This is far too simple a request,” one of the hellhounds finally rumbled.

My lips curved upward. “Have you met them? Theyhatemen. You’ll have to bribe them with so much cake, it’ll probably make you sick. Or at least sick of cooking.”

“You are far too kind to us,” one of the hounds said. “But if this is your wish, we will comply.”

I think they had realized that following me around and protecting me wasn’t an easy task given that I had wings and they did not.

But also, I was being honest. If they could positively impact the female fae, it could only work out in our favor.
