“Of course. What if you’re not there to break us out of the next Stronghold?”

She grinned, her face pink and her expression happy. I envied that happiness of hers, which had always seemed to come so easily. I knew she’d been through hell, so it wasn’t as if she’d just been blessed with a simple life and a happy spirit. But still, the way she smiled made me wish that I could feel as upbeat about everything as she did.

I wasn’t an unhappy person… but I could be happier.

I knew that better than I wanted to admit, especially since everything had happened with Clevv and the hellhounds.

Ervo’s gaze remained on me, and I could feel his eyes as if they were his damn hands on my back.

I ignored them, though.

“Can you guys find two more fae to teach Mare?” she asked the man she was working with, then looked over at me. “Turns out, it’s easier to be taught by people who are the same kind of fae as you. The phoenixes connect with Vevol differently than the dragons do, for example.”

“I never considered that,” I admitted.

Then again, there was much about Vevol that I hadn’t considered. Mostly because I’d never had the information I would need to do so, or a way to get that information.

Two dragon men jogged over less than a minute later, and Dots gave me one last quick hug before we separated, focusing on our lessons.

Or at least,tryingto focus.

I found it difficult to pay attention to much of anything when a pair of hot eyes watched me so closely, waiting for someone to touch me so he could come out of the shadows and destroy them.

When North,January, and everyone else who had attended the meeting with the unseelie leaders returned, they were grinning.

It turned out that despite the unseelie’s coldness and overall unpleasantness, they weren’t willing to abandon the females they had for the ones who only wanted to use them for baby-making.

They had met with the female fae and let them know that the classification ceremony thing wasn’t going to happen that day, and that the human women had chosen to remain with the men.

The fae ladies were apparently not thrilled—particularly their leader—but for now, they had accepted our decision.

I was sure that their leader wouldn’t accept it for long, but figured we had plenty of time to worry about that in the future.

“Can I talk to you?” I asked North, ducking away from Dots, Sunny, and the group of men surrounding us.

“Sure.” She looked a bit surprised by the request, but the two of us walked into the forest, stopping when we were far enough that no one would overhear us.

“Can you see Ervo?” I murmured to her, having turned my back to him so he couldn’t read my lips or anything.

“Yes.” She studied me curiously.

I bit my lip. “Try not to visibly react to what I’m saying, but I think Ervo is realizing that he wants to be more than brother and sister. I flew with another guy earlier, and when I came back, he got sort of caveman-like. I want to push him, but he’s made it clear that he’ll kill any man that touches me.”

North’s expression remained neutral. “Damn.”

“Yeah.”

Her lips quirked upward slightly. “So I take it there’s a plan?”

“Yes, but I need your help. Could you ask Priel to find me some men to go flying with, or hiking with, or something? And just make sure they know they can’t touch me?”

North grimaced. “I would if I could, but he won’t get involved in any of his brothers’ love lives. I already asked him why Teris is so against mating with Sunny, and he told me that he has no idea and isn’t going to poke around. It’s their business, not ours.”

I grimaced. “Damn.”

“Yeah. I’m sorry.” She made a face. “You could ask January, though. I’m pretty sure Lian is known for bugging them all and worrying over everyone like a mother hen. His focus has been on her since the pregnancy started, but he might be up for it.”
