Damn.

“Don’t tell her that, though,” he nipped at my ear, tugging lightly on both of my diamond earrings with his teeth. I bit my lip, looking at the man a little differently.

I supposed that wasn’t entirely surprising. The fae didn’t do casual hookups, but even among the possessive guys, there would be differing degrees of emotions when it came to permanent relationships.

I could definitely respect the desire to make sure someone loved you before binding your life—and mind—to theirs permanently. I had felt that way for a long time, too. And I supposed I hadn’t really taken the time to think about how things would happen between me and Ervo if we finally admitted how we felt to each other, but… well, I needed to make sure neither of us would want to change our minds afterward.

People always changed in time. That was the only real thing you could be certain of when it came to a relationship—that both of you would change.

So I needed to make sure that I understood Ervo’s past and he understood mine, to be as certain as possible that we would want to live with whoever we both became over the next however many years.

Change wasn’t bad, but having the wrong ideas about it could be detrimental.

And despite my attraction to Ervo, and the fact that I trusted him, I didn’t really know him. I didn’t understand his hopes and dreams. I hadn’t admitted my darkest secrets to him.

And those things definitely needed to come before we decided to have sex, since that would bond us permanently.

As far as Sunny and Teris went, I could understand his hesitance. Sunny put a lot of effort into making sure that she never came across as too serious, or too emotional. With sarcasm and humor, she carefully controlled the way people saw her.

Despite their many opposites—her jokes and his silence, her sass and his seriousness—I knew that Sunny had been through something shitty enough to make her wish for an escape from her life. She chalked it up to family drama whenever anyone talked about it, but that was basically just another way to say that she didn’t want to get into it.

Suddenly, Teris’s nostrils flared, and Ervo went still against my back.

In the blink of an eye, Teris was barreling into the crowd.

Ervo launched off the ground, shifting and hauling me high into the trees too fast for me to argue. He set me on a thick branch, and snarled at me, “Don’t move.”

And then he was diving back down toward the dome, spiraling toward the ground.

I blinked down at the world below me. Heights didn’t scare me anymore, thanks to my wings, but…

What was happening?

I hadn’t smelled anything abnormal.

Had there been a problem with something?

Why else would Teris have charged into the group like that, and Ervo have left me in a tree?

I could see the dome’s entrance from where I was, and no one had gone in or out, but my stomach clenched.

What if Ervo was in danger?

If this had something to do with the female fae, the other girls and I would be safe. They wanted us alive, at least until they discovered whether or not we were life-bringers.

But they didn’t care about the men.

My gaze caught on a small movement below, and I watched a line of fae women sprint toward the dome.

The music cut off before they reached the stone building and disappeared inside.

Panic flooded me.

Ervo was in there.

They wouldn’t care about keeping the men alive, but I did.

A female fae emerged from the building, with an ex-human woman hanging over her back, unconscious.
