Ervo caught up to me faster than I expected. He was carrying Nev, Teris, and Priel, but didn’t even seem to be straining under their stupidly-massive weight.

He roared at me again, and then swerved in front of me in an attempt to cut me off.

Diving downward, I flapped more forcefully, pushing myself harder.

The water in front of me shimmered, and I squinted my eyes a bit.

It almost looked like… land.

“There,” North yelled. “I see an island! It’s hidden, like the Stronghold was!”

She must’ve noticed the shimmering too.

I wasn’t fantastic at landings—especially fast ones—but launched toward it.

Multiple roars followed us as I crashed on the island, digging my talons into the dirt and trying like hell to stay upright.

My head shot upward, and I watched the men dive toward us.

My scaly jaw dropped open as they cutthroughthe tall, tropical trees surrounding us, going straight through branches and trunks like the trees were nothing but an illusion.

“Well, this is a bigger disguise than the Stronghold’s was,” North muttered.

I looked back at her, Sunny, and Dots.

Dots was on her knees on the soft white sand with her head clutched between her hands. Sunny climbed off my back and hurried over to her.

North remained where she was on my back, staring up at the sky.

“Guess we’re on our own,” she murmured to me.

Above us, the men were absolutely furious.

Well… Ervo and Priel were, at least.

Nev and Teris seemed to be just along for the ride.

We could hear their roars as they barreled through more trees, over our heads.

I tensed as Ervo dove toward the ground, and let out a breath of relief when he simply wentthroughthe island’s floor a few yards in front of us, as if it too didn’t exist to the men.

We were completely hidden from them.

North slid off my back, rubbing at her head as I shifted to my human form. Or fae form, I supposed.

“You okay?” I murmured to her, watching the men lose their shit above us.

“Yeah. I can still hear Priel, though. Through the mate bond. He’s pissed, to say the least.” Her grimace was deep. “Wants us to get back in the sky. But if we leave this place, I know there’s not a chance he’ll let me come back here.”

I felt eyes on us, and spun around.

Ervo was the usual source of that feeling—or the hellhound pack that had decided they were my protectors.

But when my eyes landed on the fae women standing between the trees, my lips parted.

“Holy shit,” North gasped, apparently seeing what I did.

OrwhoI did.
