“No.”

I frowned. “Why not?”

“You weren’t awake to give me permission.” His voice was clipped. “And I don’t need the sleep.”

Like hell he didn’t.

“Why wouldn’t you need sleep?”

“I failed to protect my female yet again. I need training—not rest.”

Oh.

There was no reason for him to feel guilty about what had happened with the female fae, but…

Well, I wasn’t surprised that he did.

“How did you fail me?” I asked him.

“You were pulled from my arms and into that cave, where anything could’ve happened to you.”

“You didn’t have my name,” I pointed out.

That was my fault, honestly.

“I should’ve earned your trust enough to have it,” he growled back.

Whatever he was stirring in that bowl was getting a lot of attention, because the man still hadn’t looked over his shoulder at me.

Clearly, I needed to do something.

My mind whirred with possible options, but I didn’t want to think or overthink about that.

I just wanted to… act. To feel.

To live, like I’d wanted to for so long.

And living meant acting without thinking, sometimes.

So I walked into the kitchen, and slid between the massive man and the batter he was whipping.

And then, I wrapped my arms around his middle.

He went still when I pressed my head to his chest. I was so tiny next to him, but I didn’t mind that. Not in the slightest.

“I need you to hug me back, Viervo,” I whispered to him.

Slowly, his hands unclenched from the bowl and strange-looking whisk.

And when he took a step back, walking me with him, his arms wrapped around me too.

My eyes closed, and I leaned into him. He was so warm, and smelled so nice.

The beat of his heart against my ear calmed me, too.

There were still problems between us that we needed to resolve—mainly, the months he’d spent thinking I was rejecting him. And the months I’d spent thinking he was rejecting me. And the fact that despite our interest in each other, and the way I trusted him with my life, we weren’t reallyfriends.

“Thank you for being there,” I said quietly to him. “For getting me out of the cave, and bringing me here.”
