Sunny answered for us. “We’re from another world, as crazy as it sounds. The men pulled us through portals, and we became fae. Not as fae as you, apparently, but still. Fae.”

“Vevol sent us here,” North finally said. “She spoke to me in a vision. I have her brands, like you do.”

The fae women were silent for a moment.

I tried to count them, but honestly, they were unfairly skilled at hiding behind trees and bushes and things. There were at least three dozen; probably more, since those were just the ones that stuck out to me.

“Please don’t kill us,” Dots finally said.

The leader-woman scowled. “We do not kill without reason.”

“We led a bunch of pissed-off men to your doorstep,” Sunny pointed out. “That seems like a reason.”

North elbowed her in the side, and she grunted.

“Vevol herself hides us. We will not be found unless she wishes us to,” the leader-woman said.

Another moment of tense silence followed.

“Has Vevol spoken to you about this?” North finally asked her. “About leaving your island, and rejoining the men?”

“She has,” the woman said in response.

We waited.

Finally, she added with great reluctance, “We were instructed to wait for a sign. I supposeyouare the sign.”

“I guess so,” North agreed, glancing up at the sky as Ervo dove toward us again.

The bastards wouldn’t give up. It just wasn’t something the fae could do.

“How many of you are there?” the leader asked. “And how many of the men still live?”

“About six hundred men,” North said. “And twenty ex-human women.”

The leader raised her eyebrows. “More than we expected.”

“Yeah, they’re pretty evenly divided between seelie and unseelie, too,” North added.

The leader’s forehead wrinkled. “Wild and controlled? What does this mean?”

Huh?

Had the fae not been divided into factions before the women were hidden away?

North’s grimace told me she was wondering the same thing.

“You will tell us of the world as it is now while we gather our things,” the leader decided. “If we are to leave our home, we won’t do so empty-handed.”

“Okay,” North agreed, though she glanced up at the sky again. I noticed her gaze lingering on her mate, and that she looked kind of worried.

He had definitely been pissed about the abandonment.

“Do you need to go back to Priel?” I asked her softly.

She shook her head quickly. “He’s fine. Angry, but since he can talk to me, he knows I’m okay. It’s the other men that are losing their shit.”

“Which of them?” Sunny’s whisper was kind of hopeful.
