“You both smell faintly of other females,” Fovea told the men, flashing her teeth at them threateningly.

“We participated in a charade of a mating to protect the females,” Nev replied calmly. “And I would count myself privileged to fight for the right to mate with you, should you still be interested.”

Her eyes softened, just slightly, and she looked to Teris.

There was a tense moment of silence.

I think everyone was waiting for him to say no.

To choose Sunny, the way she had so clearly chosen him.

But when the man finally spoke, he said, “It would be an honor to fight for you.”

Sunny’s sharp inhale was loud enough that my attention, and that of many others, jerked to her.

She quickly shuttered her reaction as well as she could, clenching her jaw and hiding her emotions.

My eyes caught on the glowing green eyes of a massive basilisk in the tree nearest to her. His scales were the same color as the tree around him, but he seemed to have moved, so the colors didn’t line up properly.

And he was glowering at Teris like he was considering swallowing the sabertooth whole.

Neither Sunny nor Dots noticed him, though, and I was quickly distracted by the upcoming fight.

Fovea flashed the men a white-toothed smile, and everyone began clearing space.

Ervo hauled me back a few feet, remaining beside the rest of the Wild Hunt.

What was left of it, anyway.

Dots and Sunny turned around and walked away.

I ached to follow them, to make sure they were okay, but I knew Ervo wouldn’t let go of me.

And ultimately, if I followed them, it would make it look like I didn’t think they could handle their shit. Which neither of them would want, even a little.

I noticed the camouflaged basilisk disappear into the trees, and my eyes tracked him for a moment before I lost him.

Was he following them?

Was that going to be a problem?

I’d have to worry about them later.

Ervo finally set me down again, tugging my back to his chest and holding me tightly to him. I knew that if I let him, he would’ve put me behind him. But if he did that, I wouldn’t be able to see a damn thing.

The fae women started the drums again, until Fovea gave a loud call to start the fight.

And then, Teris lunged.

He and Nev had to have fought dozens of times, if not hundreds. Maybe even more. The way they moved together was practically a dance, and I couldn’t pull my wide eyes away as they shifted between forms naturally and rapidly, using claws and fangs as weapons.

Their movements were so fast and smooth that I couldn’t even tell who was winning.

Orifone of them was winning.

They were like brothers, so I knew they wouldn’t fight to the death. But…

It was still nerve-wracking.
