I blinked.

Life-bringer?

“I guess so?” I said.

“Are all of you life-bringers?” Her gaze swiveled around to each of us. “Can all of your humans grow children?”

“Most human women can, yes,” I confirmed. “We assumed it was the same on Vevol. Is it not?”

“We have only ten life-bringers remaining,” the woman said. “The rest of us are merely their protectors. We will proceed with locating the strongest, most fertile males to pair with our life-bringers when we’ve settled. Our world must be replenished.”

I blinked again.

And again.

Apparently fertility wasn’t a given here.

That was… something.

“If you are also life-bringers, we will arrange males for you too,” she said, as if reassuring me.

I fought the urge to take a step back.

Sunnydidtake a step back, and positioned herself behind me and North.

North cleared her throat. “Looks like you guys are almost done packing up. Should we go? My mate’s probably worried about me…”

Yeah, I was on board with getting off this island.

At least with the men at our sides, we were safer. I didn’t like the idea of being thrown into an arranged mating as alife-bringerone bit.

“No. There is more to be done. Tell me what you know of these factions,” she commanded.

North looked at me.

Her expression told me she didnotwant to be the one spilling seelie and unseelie secrets.

Sunny would’ve already spoken up if she intended to, I knew.

“I’ll tell you what we know, if you tell us whatyouknow. None of the male fae remember that you exist, so we know nothing about you or your way of life,” I said.

Honestly, I felt kind of proud of myself for taking charge. It had been a long time coming.

“Very well.” She dipped her head in a nod, looking out at the group. “There are two classes of fae. Among the males, there are the soft—who were made to care for the life-bringers—and the brutal—who were made to sire new, strong children with the life-bringers. Among the women, there are the harsh—who defend the life-bringers—and the light, whoarethe life-bringers.”

Daaaaamn.

Well, I didn’t see that coming.

Not even a little.

It was strange, but also fascinating.

Granted, it would’ve been more fascinating had I known I wasn’t about to be dragged into this society.

The leader had paused long enough to make it clear that it was my turn to share information.

“When we were brought into this world, we were told that there are two types of fae: seelie, and unseelie. The seelie are wild, and refuse to follow any leadership. They prize freedom above all else, but the strongest of them are called the Wild Hunt, and speak for them as a whole when there’s a problem. The unseelies value control over themselves, and they have a king. His name is Aev. They call him the Tame King, because he’s mated, I guess.”
