Her lips curved into a smile that didn’t meet her eyes.

“And that’s the fakest grin I’ve ever seen.”

The way he read her moods freaked her out a bit, especially since they’d only spent one night together.

Mamba cupped her chin. “What’s bugging you?”

The moment of truth. Come clean or shove her baggage under the bed.

“First off, I love that you think of me as a woman.”

“Well, yeah, babe.” He laughed around his words, then skimmed his fingers over the curve of her hips. “You’re all woman.”

“I mean, you don’t see me as a girl or immature.”

“I don’t know where you’re headed with this, but I can tell you there’s nothing immature about you.” His brow furrowed. “Is this about our age difference?”

“Not exactly.”

“Then, what exactly?”

“You’re a biker.”

“That I am.” His smile almost undid her.

“Bikers like to party. Bikers have women falling all over them and—”

“Whoa.” Mamba propped himself up against the headboard and positioned her until they were eye to eye. “In case I haven’t made myself clear, you’re the only woman—”

“But that’s not true. If I hadn’t been here last night, you would’ve been with those two girls. I get it, but I don’t want you telling me things that aren’t true. I want us to be honest with each other.”

“You’re right. When I didn’t see you at the fight, it tore me up. Then I had a meet with Cobra that didn’t go as I planned. It pissed me off, and I did what I always do—fuck things up.”

“And you’re entitled to do that. I never want you to change who you are for me.”

Mamba shook his head and hissed out a breath. “Don’t you get it? I wanna change. Acting before thinking is what’s gotten me in deep shit and locked up. Nothing good ever comes of it.” He reached out and entwined their fingers. “I’m just lucky you didn’t tell me to go to hell last night and walk out.”

“I did try to run away.”

“Can’t blame you for that, but you didn’t flip out and go all crazy.”

“I wouldn’t have done that. I couldn’t.”

“Right, and that’s what makes you a woman. A very special woman. Instead of losing it, the way most would’ve, you kept cool. It’s the thing I admire about you the most. You think before you act. You don’t just fly off the handle.”

“It was hard for me to see you with those women, especially since they seemed more your type, more—”

“Nah, don’t you do that. Don’t you ever compare yourself to those women. You are so much more, so much—”

She leaned in and put her forefinger to his lips. “Okay, I get it.”

“I don’t think you do, but I’m gonna show you just how special you are.”

She rested her palms on his chest. The thought of Mamba’s body sent heat skimming up her spine. He lifted her off him, threw his legs over the bed, and stood. “Get dressed. I wanna show you something.”

“Not exactly what I was expecting.” She grinned up at him.

“Dragging myself away from your bangin’ body is hard enough, but if it makes you understand the way I feel about you, it’s worth it.”
