“So, Cobra knows now too?”

“Yeah, but it’s been settled. Ajax wants to fight me next Friday at the warehouse on Valley View. No big deal.”

“No big deal?” He’d never heard that pitch in Mandy’s voice.

“I’ll let him blow off some steam.”While the Marauder clubhouse gets torched.“You know I’m gonna win.”

“That’s what worries me. Too much violence all the time. It’s no good for either of us. If you win, my brother will lose his image, and if he wins, he’ll insist I stop seeing you, and we will be right back where we started.”

“First of all, I’m not losing. Ajax and the Marauders may run some fights, but he hasn’t been in the cage in months. There’s no chance he’ll beat me, but however this plays out, I’m not giving you up.”

Her heavy breathing filled the phone.

“I already told Cobra the same thing.”

“I don’t want either of you fighting over me like I’m some raffle prize.”

It spooked him that he’d said those exact words to Cobra earlier, but now he had to play it out. “It’s not like that—anyway I’m not gonna lose.”

“Can’t you tell Cobra you won’t do it?”

“No, babe. Anyway, it’s all set up. And the good news is that after the fight, I’m back in Vegas—back with the Serpents.”

“I’m happy for you because I know that’s what you want, but I don’t like you and Ajax going head to head. He’s very angry, and he can get out of control.”

The dog in Mamba liked that she was worried about him, but with all the training he’d done, Ajax and his wiry body were no match. He couldn’t believe the stupid fucker would even suggest they fight in the first place. Showed how delusional he’d become

“Come down Sunday like always; then, after next Friday, we’ll be free to do whatever we want.”

“I hope you’re right.”

Mamba hoped he was right, too, but he had a good feeling that his luck would finally change this time.

“You should have been there,” Mandy enthused as she sat crossed-legged on the bed in Mamba’s room.

“If I was, I would’ve knocked your brother on his ass.”

“It was so great. I told him what I thought and didn’t back down.”

“I’m proud of you, babe. It’s a long time coming.”

“Of course, I did get a little freaked out when he threatened you, but it felt good to stand up for myself. Almost as good as kicking Blaze in the balls.”

His face sobered. “What?”

“Blaze was waiting for me in the salon’s parking lot. Then he started yelling and threatening me, but I showed him.”

“He put hands on you?” Mamba leaned in, examining her face.

“Just pushed me a little, but I—”

Mamba sprang off the bed, slammed his palm against the wall, then spun around to face her. “That fuckin’ son of a bitch. He’s done.”

“You realize you just snarled like a mountain lion?”

“I’ll tune him up before I even get in the cage with Ajax. Fuckin’ bastard I’ll—”
