Mamba strode to his bike, straddled the seat, and lit up a smoke. The Serpents and the Marauders always coexisted. They stayed north of Sahara, dealt in small-time smash and grabs, and selling on the corner. Nothing that interfered with or concerned the Serpents—until now.

Spitting out she was Ajax’s sister rocked him, making him drop his guard and allowing her to slip through his fingers.

Somehow it must’ve all connected, but there were so many loose ends—like Mandy. He’d seen the women who hung out with the Marauders, and they were nothing like her. Some of them looked tougher than the men, but Mandy stood maybe a few inches over five feet. No gang tats, no piercings he could see, and although she had a bangin’ body, she was no hood rat.

He dug his phone out of his pocket and swiped the number Syd had given him. It rang a few times, and he was getting ready to leave a message when she picked up.

“Hello.”

“Syd, it’s Mamba. I was talking to Mandy, and I think I got—”

“Mandy? The girl pressing charges against you?”

“Yeah, who else?” Mamba made a face into the phone. “Anyway—”

“I thought I told you not to engage her, and I know Cobra told you to sit tight at the clubhouse until the trial.”

“Yeah, yeah, but I think—”

“Do you have a learning disorder precluding you from following directions?”

“Huh?” What the fuck was this woman bitching about now?

“Both Cobra and I specifically told you not to leave the clubhouse and especially not to have any communication with the woman pressing charges against you.”

“Yeah, but—”

“No buts, just do as you’re told, and—”

“If you’d shut the fuck up for one damn minute, I’d tell you Mandy’s brother is Ajax, the leader of the Neon Marauders who—”

“I know who the Neon Marauders are.”

“Then you know that’s some big, fat fuckin’ piece of this screwed-up puzzle. The Marauders also run most of the underground fights in Vegas and ran the fight where I got arrested two years ago.”

Finally, Syd went silent on the other end. Geez, she was one huge pain in his ass.

“Thatisinteresting. I’ve already requested the surveillance video from the Rook. They’re making a copy and sending it to me tonight, but if it doesn’t amount to anything, I’ll make sure to dig deeper into Mandy’s background.”

“You’re welcome.”

“Where are you now?” Syd asked.

“Sitting on my bike getting pissed off talking to you.”

“I mean, are you back at the Gold Mine?”

“Nah, not yet.” He still wanted to cruise around the downtown area, maybe spot one of the Marauders.

“Go back there now. No more investigating, and for God’s sake, stay away from downtown and the Marauders.”

Shit, that fuckin’ spooked him. “Yeah, sure.”

“I’m not fooling around, Mamba. If you get involved physically, you will jeopardize this case and any chance of being set free. Please,” she stretched out the one word, “listen, and do what I’m saying.”

“All right.”

“I mean it.” The strain in her voice filtered through the phone.
