“Take him over to Urgent Care,” Cobra ordered.

“I’m fine.” Mamba stood on rubber legs, then gripped the back of the chair.

“Yeah, right. You can’t even fuckin’ stand.”

Python slung Mamba’s good arm over his shoulder and guided him out the back door to the SUV.

Mamba hoisted himself into the seat and slammed the door. A shot of pain bolted up his shoulder from that simple move. He pulled out his phone and hit Mandy’s number. After a few rings, it went to voicemail. Then he sent her a text and waited. He stared at the phone for a full minute before he realized she wasn’t going to answer.

Python slid into the driver’s seat and started the engine. “You should’ve had that looked at the first night.”

“I gotta tell Mandy they’re gunning for Ajax.”

“What the fuck are you talking about?”

“Samson and his guys from New York. They want blood. They wanna off Ajax.”

“Probably what that fucker deserves.”

“Sure, I’d like to see him gone, too, but I can’t do that to Mandy.”

“So, you’re gonna go against a guy like Samson and screw with his plans, then ignore a direct order from your prez.”

“I got no other choice.”

“You always got a choice. You just keep making the wrong ones.” Python cranked up the air. “I thought you said she turned you out.”

Mamba rested his head against the headrest. “Let’s get this done so I can find her.”

“I guess telling you to forget her and move on won’t do me any good.” Python pulled the SUV in front of the clinic’s door.

“I wish I could, man.” Mamba released the door. “I wish I could.”

Two hours later, Python and Mamba left Urgent Care.

“Shit, what were they doin’ all that time?” Python arched his back. “Those plastic chairs are fuckin’ uncomfortable.”

“I got antibiotics, something for the swelling, and pain meds.” Mamba held up a plastic bag with the clinic’s name across the front. “Doc said it was pretty bad. They had to slice it open, drain it, then stitch me up.”

“You sure you still wanna try to save that punk's life?”

“I’d pull the trigger myself if he weren’t connected to Mandy, but I told you, I can’t take anything more away from her.”

They walked through the automatic exit doors. “How’s it feel?”

“Still numb, but they said I have a high fever, and I should rest, then come back in two days and let them check it.”

Python turned to Mamba when they got in the SUV. “You need anything else before we head back to the Gold Mine?”

“Nah, just drop me off so I can get my bike.”

“Your bike?”

“Yeah, Mandy hasn’t answered her texts, so I’m gonna check out a few spots and see if I can find her.”

“What happened to getting some rest 'cause of the high fever and the fact they just cut you open again?”

“They already gave me a shot of antibiotics, and I popped a few of those pain pills, so I should be good for a while.”
