He put the phone to his ear as Nick’s warnings banged against his brain.

“You're making the biggest mistake of your life.

You’re taking three steps backward.

You’re doing this for a woman you don’t even really know anymore.”

Yeah, it could all be true, but he could also be doing the right thing and finally getting something good in his life.

The phone rang a few times, and Samson checked the time—one in the morning—but it didn’t matter because this creature who came alive in the night.

The ringing stopped, and Samson caught his breath.

“I wondered how long it would take you to call.” Frank’s flip, arrogant voice filtered through the phone.

“Alex Monroe,” Samson spat out the name like it explained the answer to the universe.

“Fuckin’ privileged cocksucker who thinks he calls all the shots.”

“And he doesn’t?” Samson bit the inside of his lip.

“Not in my world.” Frank’s usual pause added to the drama he loved. “But what do you care about Monroe or his rep?”

“Where can we meet up?” There was no way either one would discuss any more details on the phone.

“You wanna meet with me?”

This was the part where the bastard made him beg. Back in the old days, if Frank had saidjump,Samson would’ve said, how high?—but this was a new day.

“I ain’t playin’. Just pick a day and time.”

Frank paused again. “The Bellagio. Lobby bar. Four o’clock.”

Samson made plans to deal with the devil.

Samson returned to bed and fell into a fitful sleep with crazy dreams. They included Frank, Alex Monroe, and a particularly terrifying nightmare about Lisbeth sailing off the roof of his old apartment in Brooklyn with Frank laughing in the background.

At seven a.m., he finally got up, made coffee, and sat at the kitchen counter until Lisbeth joined him an hour later.

Their eyes met, and even with everything on his mind, the sight of her brought a slight smile to his face.

“Your lips are smiling, but your eyes are tired and … sad.”

She could always see through him, which wasn’t a good thing right now.

“Got a lot of shit on my mind.”

Lisbeth poured herself a cup of coffee and sipped it; then, she joined him at the counter. “First thing I have to do is get a new laptop, then go to the office and download all my client files from Evelyn’s computer.” She rubbed at her temples. “If they thought smashing my laptop would ruin my business, they were mistaken.”

“They did it just to fuck with you.” He leaned over the counter, grabbed the carafe, and refilled his cup. “And you’re not going to the office or anywhere today. I’ll have Jax buy you any laptop you want.”

Lisbeth’s brow furrowed. “What? That’s impossible. I also have to clean up the mess they made at my apartment.”

“I’ll get somebody on that too.”

“I don’t want anyone else going through my things.”
