"I'm so happy for you, Dad! What's she like?"

Daniel breathed a sigh of relief that she was happy cause she was still his number one girl and always would be.

"She's about my age, a little younger maybe . . . uh, she's pretty and nice and funny. She has a little boy actually, he's only four years old. Her name is Cassandra and her son's name is Ben."

"Wow . . . she has a child?"

"Is that OK?" he asked, afraid he'd found a hitch.

"Yeah, it's fine, Dad."

"You sure?"

"I swear, it's fine. I just want you to be happy," she nodded.

"I could never be happy if you aren't, so tell me right now if there's a problem, honey. You're the one who always matters most to me."

"I know that, Dad. I just didn't think about another kid when I thought of you finding someone, but I'm OK with it really."

"It's just that a lot of women in my age group have kids so . . . it's just how these things work."

"I get it. Can I meet them?"

"Of course, I'll call her after supper. She's really sweet and her son is just a little guy, kind of chatty."

"So you're dating then?" she asked.

"I think so," he nodded, then remembered the kiss and blushed without meaning to.

"What?"

"Nothing," he insisted.

Daniel was quite sure she didn't want to hear about him kissing anyone.

"She better be good enough for you," Tina added as she looked over the dessert menu.

"She is."

They ate, and Tina talked about her camping trip and all her fun with Sarita. He insisted they split the New York cheesecake they always did for old-time sake and then asked if she'd go jogging with him after school the next day.

"You don't run," she laughed.

"I was thinking maybe I should start; I let myself go a little."

"No you didn't, you're fine just how you are," Tina argued.

"You're always on my team, aren't ya?" he grinned.

"Yep, cause you're always on mine."

CHAPTER6

Cassandra put Ben to bed early that night since his foot was sore and he was fussy. She poured a glass of wine before dialing Daniel's number and swallowed hard with her heart in her throat.

Hey, you've reached Daniel and Tina. We're probably out, or sleeping, or too lazy to get up . . . leave a message at the beep, and we'll call you back.

He had mentioned something about taking Tina out for dinner, and she didn't want to ruin her homecoming. She didn't want to ruin anything in their happy lives. She sighed, knowing he'd probably already told his daughter that her name was Cassandra . . . it was already a mess that she hadn't intended on.
