“It was.”

“And we both needed that.”

“We did. You were amazing, darling.”

He was growing hard again, as if being inside her was enough to fuel his need. But then again, it could have been her fingers tracing playful circles on his nipples. She tried to protest, understanding there were things they needed to rehash, from those creatures, the pirate lord, Isaiah’s history with him, and her role in this complicated mess. But he was kissing her again, hunger palpable, and her body was tingling again. Nicola wrapped her arms around him and mirrored his beat.

“So were you,” she said.

Isaiah didn’t fuck her in all corners and all places as he had promised, but he came close as he did take her on every available surface in that small, cozy—and eventually locked—cabin. They went at it for hours, screwing like rabbits in the dark of the night and losing themselves in the pleasure that just seemed to heighten every time they discovered one more thing about each other. That he found the spot under her knee that made her cry a little louder, and she discovered that caressing his balls drove him crazier were the jackpots that made it more fun. The fun took a backseat, though, as they neared sunrise. Desperation took its turn, their touches turning so frenzied that wordless pleasuring was all they could manage before they collapsed in a heap of exhaustion.

When Nicola woke up, Isaiah was gone, but the cabin was still locked to ensure she would have her privacy. She contemplated sleep, then heard the thunder banging outside and knew she was going to have to face reality quicker than anticipated. She debated for a few more minutes before finally sneaking outside to find the easiest exit there was without an audience.

“Are ye leaving?”

Marko being there to greet her was not part of the plan, but she tried to wing it as she glanced furtively at the gloomy sky.

“Where is the captain?”

“Yer too late.”

She met Marko’s gaze and understood there was no point denying everything to this man, who was looking at her in a new light—specifically her bare face and lack of wig—before banking everything down and nodding. The hint of sadness was unexpected…and alarming.

“Too late?” she echoed.

“He left for the day. Ye should, too, before they see ye.”

She tried to analyze his words for murder plans regarding a particular pirate lord but decided she wouldn’t get anywhere with this man’s loyalty. Nicola nodded.

“I see. I will go, then—”

“Wait.” The sharp tone had her blinking as she stared at his retreating back. Seconds later, a black coat with a hood was thrust into her hands. “Burning wouldn’t suit that pale face.”

She opened her mouth to say something, but Marko was already ambling away. A sentimental feeling consumed her as she donned the coat and left, glad to be covered. She was gladder still when the gloomy weather continued and allowed her to sneak into yet another disguise before continuing her way to her rented room.

“There you are. Where have you been all day?”

That people were sneaking up on her because she was too distracted irked her. Nicola turned to take her irritation out on Maddox, then stopped when she spotted someone else with him. Ruby perused her from head to toe.

“What are you today?” the witch asked.

“A regular woman like you are,” Nicola replied, then paused. “Someone who hates the sun and likes her untanned skin. What areyoudoing?”

It was Maddox who responded to that. “I found her a room.”

Nicola looked at him, then at Ruby.

“That he did. A separate room, obviously,” Ruby said firmly, reading her speculation. “I’m still debating if I should stay here or go with them, so I’m going to switch back and forth between the room and the cabin until I decide.”

“That sounds…” Like a waste of money. “Good.”

“Nic, where were you?”

She sighed, wishing she could erase last night’s chase even when it led to something beautiful.

“We found our culprit. But it’s not over yet.”

She tried to explain without any other party listening in, but Ruby wouldn’t budge. Nicola closed the three of them in and rehashed the situation as best as she could, watching as the woman’s features sharpened.
