Isaiah cracked an eye open, relief flooding him at the sight of a panicked Moon. But the relief was short-lived when he spotted Maddox after, curled in a corner and only semi-conscious. Isaiah sat up and groaned when his muscles protested.

“I’m okay,” he managed, brushing off Moon’s attempt to help. “You?”

“I’m okay.” Moon glanced at Maddox. “He is, too, but he won’t take any more blood from me.”

And the half-vampire looked like he was halfway through starvation. Grimacing, Isaiah crawled toward him. When he was close, Maddox sensed it and jerked back, but Isaiah was faster—a miracle, really, and a testament to how weakened the man was. He grabbed Maddox by the lapels of his coat and bared his teeth.

“Drink up. You need your energy, and I won’t have you dying here when we need you. Moon needs you.”

Maddox snarled, but the words got through, especially when Maddox peered at Moon’s face. Hunger flared in dark eyes when Isaiah tilted his head, and the eyes turned red when Maddox finally gave in and pierced the skin with his fangs. Isaiah gritted his teeth at the initial painful contact, then held still while Maddox drank eagerly.

Seconds later, Maddox pushed him back so hard that Isaiah almost fell on his back. But Moon was there to catch him.

“I’m sorry,” Maddox hissed. “But I can’t have anymore.”

Translation: It was disgusting. Or it was so good that he might end up draining all the blood.

Isaiah nodded, taking it in stride. He walked around the room, where there was a separate bedroom and two windows, but all of it, including the door, had cell bars on the other end. He considered burning the room and seeing if Ven cared enough to free them, then gave the idea up when he surmised that Ven might only save him and not the others.

“What’s the plan?” Moon asked, eyeing Maddox as the half-vampire still struggled to sit upright. It made him suspect more damage than first visible had been done to the man.

“Let’s…sit on it for now. He needs rest.”

“I can escape,” Maddox called out, words stuttering. Moon met Isaiah’s gaze and wordlessly shook his head.

“Yeah, sure, we will escape. Soon,” was all Isaiah said.

It had all been so simple: kidnap the pirate lord, get him to confess to his crimes to Ostrov Krov, and finally get Isaiah’s hands on the vengeance he thirsted for so much. But his ego that nothing could go wrong had put them in jeopardy, and now it was up to Isaiah to make things right.

It couldn’t be simple anymore. He needed plans underneath plans and safety measures on top of safety measures. He needed to get these two out of here, even if it meant he had to stay behind and face the wrath coming his way. But how?

And what was Nicola up to?

They slept on it and woke up to a food tray sent their way and blood bags for Maddox. They didn’t trust a single entry one bit and tested it out slowly before deciding to have Isaiah eat first and pass it on to them when his body didn’t feel aftereffects. Maddox was getting better, but the man still had a long way to go.

“What the hell did they do to you?”

“I don’t know. I wasn’t conscious for most of it.” The man held up an arm, which was a feat in itself. His veins protruded from his skin. “But this hurts like hell.”

“Remind me to remind you to fuck them up when we get out of here,” Isaiah said.

“Plan?”

“Thinking now. There’s a crazy one, including burning, and a semi-decent one.”

“Decent,” Maddox barked out.

“Decent it is. Moon, remember when we encountered Captain Alvarez in the seas?”

“Captain Alvarez was a petty, perverted thief. He was…” Moon’s eyes widened. A second later, he was lying on the floor and clutching his stomach. “Oh, it hurts.”

Isaiah strode to the door, banging loudly. He banged and banged, not stopping until the wooden door was opened, and there was only the cell door separating him from the pirate guard. When he recognized the man that he had fucked up earlier, he inwardly groaned.

“Hey, mate. It’s good to see you well. My friend here needs help—”

“No.”

“He’s in pain. You must have put poison in our food. Or it must be rotten food. All he needs is someone to check up on him and—”
