“I’ve missed you too, baby girl!” She pulls me back by my arms, her bright lilac eyes searching over my body. “Someone is fucking you real good. I can smell him all over you—” She pauses, eyes narrowing up to the ceiling. “Them…I can smell, wait, why is it them?”

I hide my chuckle, turning around to pick up my shoes and catching the tail end of the look she gives Blaire. “They’re just…friends right now.”

“Aha.” Raidne picks up my other Doc, untying the lace and handing it to me.

We’re dressed similarly. Short mini skirt, thigh-high stockings, and a tee. I plan to wear a coat out tonight, though, so the majority of my outfit will be hidden. “And so who are they?”

“You’ll meet them tonight.” I shove my phone into my pocket as Blaire finally stands from her chair, handing the bottle to Raidne before tightening her high pony.

“Can’t wait…and where are you staying right now?” Raidne asks, plucking the old photos hanging on Cooper’s wall. She smiles at all of them but one.

“With Dion at Whisper Manor.”

Her hand stops over a photo of us that was taken during freshman year. Blaire’s mom and mine wanted a photo of us three outside the school. Cliché, but now I’m glad I allowed it since we’ve all lost our mothers.

“Right! And how is that going?” She turns to face me, tilting her head to study me closely. “I mean, staying at the house, not the dealing with your archnemesis.”

“Ah…” I finish up my last boot and look up at her from below. “Not bad. I mean, I don’t sleep much anymore anyway, so I’m always up before the sun and out on the water.”

Her eye twitches, and Blaire jumps in front of her, reaching for my hand. “Let’s get you to your party.”

I smile widely at her. “Please.”

We rush down the stairs of Cooper’s house, waving to his mom before waiting for an Uber outside. Cooper’s mom is usually too high to know who goes in and out.

“We could walk,” I say, squeezing my jacket around myself. “It’s not that far.”

“In these heels?” Blaire gestures to her boots. “I don’t think so. It’s fine. This will be him!”

Headlights flash down the road before a deep growl of an engine comes rumbling up beside us. A black muscle car pulls up on the curb just as the driver’s window rolls down and Malyk’s smirk flashes between all three of us.

“Well, shit, girls. I mean, all this for me?”

“Har, har…”

Both Raidne and Blaire slide into the back as I round the front to slip into the passenger seat. The engine shakes beneath my butt, and I turn to face Malyk, who’s wearing a black T-shirt and casual jeans.

“This yours?”

“Mmmhmm…sometimes.” His hand comes to my chin, forcing my face to his. He leans down, kissing me softly on the lips. My body buzzes to life from the connection. “Happy birthday, baby girl.”

I smile widely at him, my insides turning to lava. I hate myself right now, but I’d be lying if I denied the way he made me feel. Because I think I know. I know that beneath all that sweetness there has to be poison. Sugar was the first drug of mankind, after all.

“Thanks.”

“Okay! Let’s drive!” Blaire rushes us along, and I turn in my seat to get a read on her.

What is her deal? I didn’t get a chance to introduce either of them and they’re acting like Malyk killed their cat. Before I can catch her attention, she pops open a little vile and taps white powder onto her pinkie, taking a hit before doing the same to Raidne.

Her hand is coming to me when I look between her and the snow.

“Oh, come on,” she teases, dancing to the song that’s playing loudly in the background. “Let old Shiloh come out to play. Just for tonight.”

Both she and I know that old Shiloh was a problem, but I take the rolled-up dollar bill from her and bring it to my nostril, leaning down and snorting the line so fast it pinches my brain. The taste of chemicals hits the back of my throat as I tap the top of my nose to get off the excess powder.

I catch Malyk’s eyes when I come back up, clearing my nose and hitting the music louder. D12’s “Devil’s Night” thuds through the speakers, and just as Malyk turns back to face the road, a smirk touches the side of his face. He reaches for my chin, dipping his thumb into my mouth as the whole back seat goes quiet.

“Suck.”
