A sneer spread over his face as he relinquished it, shaking his head. “You’re damn right. I don’t give a fuck.”

“That’s fine,” I told him, gathering the full box of belongings that was coming with me. It was heavier than anticipated and I prayed that it would hold as I moved to the door, ready to get the hell out of there. I damn near dashed down the stairs, stopping when I caught a whiff of… something.

I turned to my father. “Do you… have female company?” I asked, realizing I was catching a breeze of women’s perfume.

“Not your damn business.”

I raised an eyebrow. “You know what… you’re right. Thank you for allowing me to get these things.”

“You’dbetterbe grateful,” he huffed. “After the way you’ve treated me, I shouldn’t do shit for you.”

“Excuse me?” I said, then immediately thought better of entertaining an argument with him.

I had what I wanted.

It was best to just get the hell out of here.

“Never mind,” I followed up, before he could reply. “I’m just gonna go.”

“Don’t fucking come back.”

“I won’t, don’t worry,” I called over my shoulder as I headed out the door. “You’ve made it perfectly clear you’re not interested in being my father. I won’t argue the point or force you.”

“You wouldn’t blame me for anything I’ve done if you knew the truth. You think your mother was some sort of saint?”

“I don’t actually,” I admitted, looking up from stowing the box in my front seat. “I think she was human, just like the rest of us. So if you have something to say… just say it, Daddy. What is all of this about?” I asked, stepping back to where he was hanging out of the door. “Is all of this because she hurt you? If it is… I understand you being angry with her, but… what didIdo to deserve being treated like this?”

“You look like her,” he spat. “Every time I see your face, she’s just…right there. And I have to remember the betrayal she wouldn’t admit until I forced her to.”

“Forced her how?” I asked. “On her death bed?”

“It was the only time she’d tell the fucking truth. Even with the evidence in her face.”

“What evidence?”

“The test.”

“A DNA test? For us? For me and Soren?” I questioned him and he shook his head.

“She already knew. Weallknew. And I looked like a fucking fool for thirty-some-odd years pretending I didn’t see it. Do you know what that does to a man?”

I swallowed. “I can imagine. Why didn’t you just leave? Why didn’tshe?”

“I wouldn’t let her,” he growled, with such vitriol that I took a step back. “And me? Well… the business was hers. What the hell else was I supposed to do?”

Pushing out a deep breath, I shook my head again, half turning back to my car.

I only had theslightestbit of respect left for this man and it was disappearing fast.

“Did you kill her?” I asked, my last question.

I wasn’t sure I could handle much more.

He glared at me, for long enough that I thought I knew the answer just from that.

But then he shook his head.

“I should’ve.”
