“I don’t know.” He shrugged, as much as he could. “Just looks like gold-digger shit to me. William has been fucking her for like a month—maybe two?”

I bit down on the inside of my lip, thinking back to the last time I’d seen Bree. I’d noted her absence, but hadn’t thought too much of it until recently. And then Nalani asked about her, which highlighted it even more.

So this explained quite a bit.

“Thank you for sharing this with me,” I said, snapping my attention back to EJ. “Anything else you’d like to add?”

“Don’tleave me with these people, man,” he begged. “Have you heard the shit folks say about them? Something isoffabout them.”

I grinned. “Yes, there is, that’s exactly why I brought you here.”

“Wait!” he shouted as I stood. “I don’t deserve this shit man. I can work for you! I can—”

“Nah,” I shook my head. “You can’t. Any chance of sympathy from me died when you decided to scare my wife. And you know Nalani… she doesn’t scare easily. So webothknow you crossed a fucking line.”

“But—”

“But nothing.” I shook my head. “Becausethatkilled my ability to sympathize with your situation. What you did in her apartment?” I blew out a low whistle. “Man… I don’t give a fuck what happens to you now.”

“My people will come after me!” he insisted desperately. “You’ll never be safe. Your bitch will always be looking over her shoulder.”

I shook my head. “No, actually. See, once Ihandlesomething… it’s handled. Completely. You’re neutralized, nigga. As good as gone andnobodyis going to remember when it wasn’t that way.”

“Just kill me,” he begged, as I reached the door. “Comeon. You know this shit isn’t right! They’re fucking… cannibals or something. Freaky ass shit that nobody deserves.”

I sighed, then turned the knob. “You’re right, EJ. Nobody deserves to be handed over to the Blacks.” I looked back at him and grinned. “Now I want you to guess exactly what you are to me?”

“Wait! Don—”

Whatever else he said got drowned out.

When I closed the door, Parris Black was standing in the hall.

I steeled myself immediately, refusing to flinch even though I was startled.

“You done?” he asked, nodding at the door.

“Yeah,” I assured. “Do whatever. I don’t want to have to worry about himorhis people.”

Parris grinned.

Creepy as fuck.

“Understood. All I needed was a reason; they’re bad for the environment.”

A flash of curiosity hit me, but I immediately shook it off. I didn’t need to know what the hell that meant. “I’ve got another name for you too. Maybe two.”

“I’m listening.”

“William Stark. Breanna Sterling.”

He raised an eyebrow. “Family?”

“She lost the opportunity to be considered that.”

He nodded. “I’ll talk to Elias about it.”

“Thank you.” I pushed out a deep sigh, knowing the next question I needed to ask, but desperately not wanting to.
