“Not the point.” I laughed. “Like I said, just making sure.”

She raised an eyebrow. “Mmhmm. It kinda feels like you know something I don’t, but since I’m sure that willalwaysbe the case… fine. I’m good.”

“Good. You got a minute to talk?”

“Aaand there it is.” She nodded. “Is something wrong?”

“If there was, I would’ve fixed it before I ever brought it to you,” I assured her. “I’m hoping you see it as something right.”

The response I got at first was narrowed eyes, but then she nodded again, gesturing for me to follow her to a nearby table. It was quiet in here—since, as she said, it was still during most peoples’ work day and wouldn’t really start popping until later—so we had relative privacy.

“I’m taking you on vacation,” I told her as soon as we were seated.

As Shiloh predicted, I definitely caught a prickle of irritation in her eyes, but she held it back. “Are you asking me or telling me?”

“A little of both,” I explained. “A compromise.”

“How so?”

“Well… we’re going on the trip, full stop, not debatable,” I said. “But… we’ll plan around dates that work for you. I know you’ll want to put certain things in place around here before we go.”

She nodded, that little thread of frustration from a moment ago already gone. “I appreciate you not doing a wedding repeat on me.” She laughed. “I won’t pretend I couldn’t use some time away—nothiding bruises from the world—but a real vacation. Where are we going?”

“That’s confidential.”

“You’re kidding.”

“Not at all,” I countered. “My ability to surprise you with lavish things is one of my only tools in this relationship. I’m not giving it away any time soon.”

She laughed. “It’s not your only tool.”

“What else do I have?”

“A massive dick. Skillful tongue.” She winked and there wasn’t shit I could dobutgrin about that.

“Glad to know my efforts in those areas are recognized.”

“And appreciated,” she added.

“So great sex and a bottomless wallet, those are my assets, huh?”

She bit down on her lip, keeping back another smile. “You’ve got a few more.”

“I’m listening.”

“I can’t tell you, you’re arrogant enough.”

I shrugged. “Not my first time being accused of such a thing.”

“Really?!” She fake gasped. “I would’ve never guessed.”

“Uh-huh.” I chuckled, pushing back my chair. “Shi is going to send you the possible dates for our trip. We’ll go with whatever you want, but… the sooner the better.”

“Okay, but wait,” she insisted. “Before you leave… there’s something I need to ask you. Something… less fun than your topic was.”

Immediately, I pulled myself back up to the table. “What is it?”

“Stanford Reese,” she said, leaning in a bit so she could lower her voice. “I… did you know he was Soren’s father?”
