“Pump your brakes,” she warned, laughing. “I didn’t say that… yet. We don’t even know if it’s viable, which is a possibility, considering the pregnancy test I took before they removed the implant was negative. I haven’t had any noticeable symptoms. Plus the attack. This could end up being… not a good situation.”

“Anythingcould end up being not a good situation,” I reminded her.

She nodded. “That’s true. But still… I’m going to hang on to my watchful enthusiasm until we have more information.”

“Understandable,” I agreed.

She leaned in closer to me. “What about you? How do you feel?”

“Me?”

“Yeah, you.” She giggled. “Who else would I be talking to,duh.”

I chuckled, shaking my head. “I’m fucking around. I… shit. I feel… like everything I wanted is working out. I feel like you’re gonna be having my baby and both of you are going to be perfectly healthy through the whole process. I feel amazing, Mrs. Sterling.”

She rolled her eyes. “It’s taking you a lot not to like… jump up and down, isn’t it?”

“Itreallyis,” I admitted, laughing. “I’m trying to respect your misgivings. But after we get confirmation… I’m warning you now… a whole fucking celebration.”

“As it should be.” She nodded. “It’s still just…wow,” she said, falling back onto the pillows, propping a hand on her stomach.

There was no noticeable difference yet, but I still didn’t hold myself back from moving with her, resting my head right next to her hand.

“You’re going to run my damn nerves in the ground through this whole thing, aren’t you?” she asked.

I grinned. “You probably won’t even notice a difference.”

There was quiet for a moment between us—a good kind of quiet, not uncomfortable—but then I rememberedmycorrespondence from earlier in the evening.

News I didn’t want to overshadow what should be a joyous moment.

It only took me a few seconds of thought to decide it was better to tell her now, beforewe got the additional information tomorrow that would alter our sentiments around the positive test.

“I need to tell you something,” I spoke up, turning so I was looking at her face.

Her brow furrowed. “What is it? Is something wrong?”

“That’s subjective,” I answered, sitting up. “I know Soren already gave you the heads up that I had somebody put eyes out for your father and Bree.”

She nodded. “Yeah. He told me. Did they find them?”

“They did. Do you… understand what that means?”

Her gaze shifted to the ceiling, staring for a moment before she pushed out a sigh. “I do.”

“Okay… how do you… are you okay?”

“That’s a loaded question,” she answered, with a dry laugh. “Should any daughter be okay after hearing that her father was… killed? Tortured? Who knows?”

“It’s fine to not be okay.”

She laughed harder at that. “But… Iamokay.” She scoffed. “Which is… sad. Really, really sad.”

“And not your fault,” I assured her. “The grown folks made their decisions, good and bad. You don’t owe William any certain level of feeling just because he conceived or even raised you. There’s more that goes into it than that. Whatever you feel—or don’t feel—about him… it seems a lot like it washisdoing.”

She sighed. “You’re right, but… I think knowing thatImight be having a child, I don’t… I don’t ever want this baby to become an adult who feels like I feel right now.”

“So we make sure we don’t cultivate that.”
