But… therewassome usefulness to that though.

Once we’d said goodnight to Grandma Calli, and lost Bree somewhere in the house, I was able to pull my brothers aside, to my father’s study.

“What do y’all know about thisEJnigga, mid-level banger, runs a couple streets in Blackwood…”

Ares shrugged. “I’ve heard of him, don’t know much. Not really my area, you know?”

I nodded.

We all kept our hands fairly clean, but Ares, out of the three of us, was downright squeaky where the things a dude like EJ would be concerned with.

We both looked at Titan.

“You want him shut out?” he asked. “All it takes is a phone call.”

“Nah.” I shook my head. “I can’t have anything blowing back on Nala. Just… keep an eye on him.”

Titan smirked. “So you’re askingmefor favors now?”

“I’m asking you to pull your weight, baby brother,” I responded. “He might become a problem.”

“Why would he become a problem?”

I sighed, letting out a deep huff before I gave a quick explanation of his connection to Nalani.

“Damn, you haven’t even hit yet and she’s already got you tight?” Titan laughed. “I thought this thing with her was supposed to be cut and dry.”

“Clearlyit’s not though, is it?” I snapped. “Just… do what I said.”

“Yes,dad,” was Titan’s dry response as he dismissed himself from the office. Ares looked at me, shaking his head.

“What?” I asked.

“You can’t keep treating him like he’s…”

“Our baby brother?” I filled in and Ares chuckled.

“Nah, like he’s a lackey or something,” he said. “He does some dumb shit, yeah, but Titan is solid. Give him some credit.”

My eyebrows went up. “You really think so?”

“I do,” he said. “I know you’ve been absorbed in your own shit, but… maybe pay a bit more attention to the big picture.”

I… didn’t know what the fuck that really meant and didn’t ask.

Ares was asking for focus I didn’t have.

I already had a million things happening in my head, balancing more fragile blocks than I probably should at one time.

Soon though, things would calm down.

I hoped.

In the meantime, I could handle the stress.

I always did.

I left the family house to go back to the quiet and privacy of my own, ready to immerse myself in my nightly wind-down.
