He crossed his arms. “Did something embarrassing happen?”

“Not yet, but I see the potential for it,” I answered, choosing to speak plainly instead of trying to swallow my feelings. “I didn’t like the vibe of whatever that was.”

“All that was, was my head of marketing congratulating me on our pending nuptials. Forgive any awkwardness on her end, please. She’d had a little too much to drink.”

My eyes narrowed, and I propped my hands on my hips. “Stop treating me like I’m an idiot,” I demanded. “What is she to you? Or… what was she, previously?”

He blew out through his nose. “Fiancée.”

“There it is,.” I smiled. “Thank you, for your honesty. Now… care to tell me why it seemed like a good idea for your former fiancée to be spending the night in the same house with us right now?”

“Because she is a family friend still and because she is indeed my head of marketing. And she’s invited to the wedding. There are a lot of c-suite people fromWholesome Foodsstaying in the house for the wedding.”

“How many of them have you fucked?”

“Just her.”

“Just her. So… the rule about not sleeping with women you aren’t married to, that was… after her?”

“It was several women after her,” he answered. “You finished interrogating me?”

“For now.”

“Forever,” he countered, moving to his door. “Unless you want to talk to me about EJ?”

Nope.

That was a great way to get me to leave.

He opened the door to usher me out, even though that was already my plan anyway. I was barely over the threshold when he grabbed me by the arm, pulling me close.

“Get some sleep,my love,” he told me. “You’re gonna need it.”

TWELVE

ORION

Where the hell is Calli?

I’d been peeking out into the small crowd at regular intervals, waiting for my grandmother to take her place of honor up front. Because we didn’t want a big ordeal, there was no bride’s side or groom’s side—just the first two aisles of seating, side by side, reserved for treasured friends and family members.

Nalani’s Aunt Lucinda was there, as well as her lawyer, Demetria Byers. There was space for her father and brother, but I’d be shocked if the former showed his face today. I had no doubt Soren would show up for his sister and her friends were already in the building, in the bridal suite doing whatever the bride did before the wedding.

Last minute touchups on makeup?

Hair?

Shots?

Talking her into running away from this shit or not?

Who knew?

Then there was my side. The only people currently seated in myVIProw were Ares and fuckingBree, whose silly ass had dressed in black.

Shiloh must not have seen that in time to do much about it.

Titan was in the back with me. My brothers had flipped a coin for the privilege —my word choice—of standing with me as best man, and the young knucklehead had won.
