“Orion, you’regetting marriedin like five minutes!”

“Okay, then I have at least three to go talk to her,” I insisted, shrugging her off and pushing my way through the doors.

A bit of a hush went around the room at my presence, but I tossed up a hand to give a brief wave and a smile, then set my sights right on Calli, who was seated now.

I went straight to her, kneeling in front of her to ask for myself. “How you doing, gorgeous?”

She smiled. “You look so handsome,” she gushed, cupping my face in her hands. “What are you doing out here right now?”

“I had to come check on my favorite girl,” I told her. “Now don’t ignore the question, how are you?”

“I’m doing just fine, nothing a stiff drink and a little rest won’t fix. How areyou?”

I raised an eyebrow. “I’m good.”

“You sure?” she countered. “Are yousurethis is what you want to do?”

“Why wouldn’t I be sure?” I asked, and she gave me a look—a look I knew all too well from growing up under her thumb through the years. The same “don’t bullshit me right now” look I’d just given Shiloh a few moments before.

“You know you don’t have to do this on my account? You could take your time, make sure it’s right. I’m going to be here a good long time, you know?”

I just smiled.

She was much more certain aboutthatthan I was.

“I promised you I would, didn’t I?” I reminded her. “I promised you’d get to see it and here we are.”

“But—”

“Butnothing.” I chuckled as I stood, giving her a quick kiss on the forehead before I fully straightened. “Shiloh is going to start spitting fire at me if I delay the ceremony starting. I want you atyourdoctor’s office for full checkup first thing Monday morning, all right?”

“You don’t tell me what to do, boy,” she huffed, and I gave herherno bullshit look right back.

“Don’t play with me, old woman,” I told her, making her laugh as I quickly made my way behind the scenes. As soon as I was on the other side of that door, I took a deep breath, trying to calm the maelstrom of twisting emotions working their way through me.

“You know you don’t have to do this on my account right?”

No.

I didn’thaveto.

But all things considered, I was certain enough I was making the right move to pull the trigger. I never doubted my gut—something deeply ingrained in me by my father—and I wasn’t about to start questioning it now.

“Ay man, you good?” Titan asked, clapping me on the shoulders as he came to stand in front of me .

“Yeah.” I nodded. “Ready to get this done.”

Titan chuckled. “You make it sound like a damn colonoscopy, man. Nalani is bad as fuck. It can’t be that hard to swallow.”

“Nah, it’s not about that.Bad asfuckisn’t a foundation to build a marriage and family on.”

“Shit, maybe not foryou.”

“And shouldn’t be for you either.” I laughed, giving him a playful shove. “Don’t be dumb.”

“When am I eve—don’t answer that.” He caught himself, stepping back as the door opened again.

“Y’all ready?” Shi asked. “Everything is place.”
