“I guess more than anything, what’s troubling me right now, is making sure that… even though this is business, even though I kinda forced her hand…”

“You want to make her fall in love or something? Put a card in her hand with no limit.”

I scoffed. “No, it’s not about that. And she’s not even impressed with that.”

“All women are impressed with it. Why do you think your lil friend Eva took half of mine.”

“Because you couldn’t keep your dick to yourself.”

“And you plan to?”

“I do, actually,” I explained. “That’s part of all this. I want what I want from her, and I have no doubts that I’ll get it, but I… I don’t want her to have a negative experience. I want her to feel like it was worth it, despite how she feels aboutme.”

“What is she getting in the deal? What was her incentive?”

“Getting to keep her family’s store, which never should’ve been up for grabs in the first place.”

Leon snorted. “Okay, give the woman her shit then. Problem solved, early. You’re welcome.”

“That’s already in the works,” I assured. “I just wonder if it’s enough.”

“So you like her then?”

I frowned. “Where the hell would you get that from?”

“If this wasall businessthe way you seem to want to claim, you wouldn’t give a shit about her experience, or if she was getting enough. Are you worried about the other sidegetting enoughin any other deal?”

“They don’t look like Nalani.”

“Nigga, exactly.” He chuckled. “You canit’s business, it’s businessall you want, but it’s clearly personal. And there’s nothing wrong with it being personal because that’s your damn wife. Unless… you’re thinking she’s got some ulterior motives or something?”

I blew out a sigh. “I think there are moments she’d welcome the opportunity to put a knife in my back.”

“Offense or defense?”

That question struck me right in the chest, making my eyes go wide.

But I told the truth.

“I’m sure it would feel like defense to her. I put her on the ropes to make this happen.”

“So how she feels about you is your own doing?”

“Unfortunately.”

“Well… you gotta get her off the ropes then. Can’t ever start building a real relationship unless you’ve done that.”

“Real relationship? Who said that?”

“Nigga, yousaid that.” Leon chuckled. “Since my divorce, I’ve learned to read between the lines. I’ll never get married again, but if I did… I’d know how to do it right this time.”

“I would hope you weren’t enough of a loser to fumbletwowives.”

“You just make sure you keep ahold of the first one, how about that?”

“That’s the plan,” I told him.

Truthfully.
